timing belts?
I have 118k on my SVX and no idea as to when the belts were changed. How would I check them and when should they be replaced? How hard is it to do? or should I just take it to a subaru guru?

The manual says to replace them at 60K, but many members don't change them until 80 - 100K. If it was replaced at 60K, or has never been replaced, it may be time. If you do, replace a few other things at the same time like the water pump. It may not be above your level of skill, but it is a little tricky. Maybe some others will give you some ideas. Good luck.

Timing belts are not hard to do...its just very time consuming. I watched TomsSvx do mine and it took a long time. If you have 118K on ur car as of right now I would do it very soon just to be on the safe side. If the belt breaks the engine will stop running but nothing else should happen as our engines are non-interference types

I had a timing belt let go on my 89 Pulsar and things went everywhere... There was literally a dent in the valve cover from a piston punching a valve and sending it out of the head. Glad to know that if it lets go that nothing with smash together, just it will be hard to reset the timing. Im thinking its been done but not sure... can I take the timing covers off and visually inspect them? There is a large belt in the trunk that was there when I bought it... about an inch and a half wide... seems to me like a timing belt... So Im hoping that it was done already. It has a new tranny as well... replaced 4k miles before I bought it Now Im getting a sqeaking from the rear so I suspect a wheel bearing is the culprit... I look forward to working on this car.. I enjoy working on them and so far working on this car hasnt been too difficult. I replaced the rear differential and driveshaft myself without a manual and YES I torqued EVERYTHING as specified.

Squeaking indicates something rubber. Bearings growl.

SVXi are non-interference..so if the timing belt lets go..nothing breaks.

If the water pump seizes, that will do some damage. At 118K miles, it would be good insurance to do the water pump, thermostat, and thermostat seal. Its necessary to remove the timing belt to get to the water pump, so there's not much point to skipping the timing belt replacement. And while you're replacing those items, you might as well do the cam seals and the crank seal because they are easily accessible once the timing belt is removed. Seems like its getting carried away, but you won't have to touch the front of the engine again for another 100K miles.

Sounds pretty invasive but I presume a good idea... Unfortunately without having a record of maintenance (like I keep on all my cars) I have to do investigational work to figure out what has and hasnt been done... I had to research the VIn on the car, engine, and transmission only to find that the transmission isnt from this car (previous owner said it was replaced by the dealer in march. And another interesting thing that ive only found out about since creating this post is that the engine doesnt match either.. So i have an SVX a trans and an engine that dont match each other.. not sure if thats a good thing or not...

I agree that, absent a service history, you should replace the timing belt (and other items recommended in previous posts). Though a broken belt may not cause internal engine damage, it will most definitely leave you walking.
