Dude, where's my car?

Much to my amusement I watched as a customer tried to get in her car to go home. Her door wouldn't budge when she pulled on the handle, so she reached in the open window and unlocked the door from the inside. This set of the car alarm. The woman seemed very confused for a few moments. Then it hit her: this was not her car! What makes this funny is that her car was right next to the one she was trying to get into, and apart from the fact that they were both Outback wagons they had nothing in common. Her car was blue and grey, the other was green and titanium. Her car was a 96, the other was a 03. Her car had a hood scoop, the other did not. Her car did not have a hood deflector, the other one did. Her car had white wall tires (puke) the other did not. How distracted do you have to be to confuse these two cars???

When I worked at a newspaper in Vermont, one of the editors loaned her car to a reporter who needed transport to cover a story. After awhile we noticed a commotion out back, and by and by a couple of cops came in to ask if we'd noticed anyone messing around with this particular Ford that had been parked near our building. Seemed a car belonging to one of our office neighbors had vanished. We were shaken to think a car could be pinched from our lot in broad daylight.

Well, turned-out the reporter had gotten into the wrong Ford, and the key actually worked. She did say it had been hard to get it in the ignition, though.

My moms door key(95 GMC Safari Van) will start my dads truck(88 GMC Seirra P/U) and I believe that his igntion key will unlock her van. And one of my old cars(86 GMC S-15 Blazer) would unlock his doors.

That happened to my mom when she had a couple Fords. I believe the key from the Escort would open the Mustang, and I know she once got into the wrong Escort with her key.

When I had my maroon 626, I was waiting for my friend outside the kroger one time. An old lady came and opened the front passenger door and sat inside. Me and my two friends at the back seat were so surprised.... (Who was that?)

Turned out she was looking for red Lincoln.

It was quite funny when my friend came in my car we told her.

I was chatting with a fellow who drove a fairly new Volvo station wagon. While we were talking, we see this little old lady pull up in an identical car and park right next to his. We both noted the coincidence and continued our conversation. A very short while later, the old lady comes back to "her" car, presses the unlock button on the key fob, (which makes the right noise, but flashes the wrong lights,) and hops in.

We both thought this was pretty amusing and the guy who's Volvo the little old lady had gotten into was willing to see things play out. So the little old lady fumbles around for a moment but can't figure out how to put her keys into the ignition. Finally she notices that she can't find the spot where the keys go because there are already keys in it! So she removes them. She puts her own keys in, but of course they don't work. She keeps at it for several minutes before giving up. Suddenly she notices the first pair of keys she'd just placed in the passenger's seat. She promptly picks them up, puts them in the ignition, and starts the car. Seeing this, and realizing the miscalculation of leaving his keys in the car, the true owner hops to his feet and hastily makes his way towards his car. Before he gets there, the old lady has almost backed out of the parking spot. He makes it there just in time for her to put the car into a forward gear. She pulls forward about a foot only to notice him standing in her path before she stops again. He slowly makes his way around to the driver's door and says something to her. Fortunately the window had been left down or else she might have driven off, but she took a moment to bat a hand at his as if to fend him away before he managed to explain that she had the wrong car.

I didn't get the opportunity to overhear the conversation, but I could see her head turn to look at the other Volvo several times as he pointed it out to her. I could see him point to the keys on the passenger's seat until she picked them up and handed them to him. I could see him hand them back to her and ask for the other ones. I could see the confused look on her face when he did. It took a couple minutes to explain it to her, but eventually he managed to get her to put the car in park and hop out. When she finally did, she still seemed confused. I don't think it was immediately apparent to her where her car was, but I guess he'd done a good job of convincing her that the one she was in wasn't hers. He hopped into his car and pulled it into a different parking spot on the other end of the lot. The little old lady eventually found her car, and managed to drive away.

...and the fellow who'd car she's hijacked; He returned to finish the conversation we'd been having - with keys in hand.
