Harvey, I haven't wrenched professionally since 1972, and that was on traditional American iron. I can assure you that in my part of the the US there was no piston matching 30 years ago - except maybe for serious blueprinting work. Although with the advent of Plastigauge, there was some crank/rod bearing matching by the better shops and by most hot-rodders.

Are you saying most auto/engine builders do this today, i.e., Toyota, or is this something modern, and good, rebuilders do?
Well it has happened with better engines, for at least 20 years. I was not including mass produced US iron, though as i see here in Aust. the GM and Ford engines now do.

The T ford started the 'one piston fits all' engine construction, but as they have been draged into the 21th century, of OHC, four valve, aluminium blocks, this is necessary to maintain engine tightness. This pays off in engine life, noise, oil consumption, and emissions.

Rolls Royce selectivly fitted the whole engine, and gear box.

Harvey.
