broken front diff?
I just had a bad experience that left the car in a parking lot. I left work early (sick) and was on the way to get some meds when I heard some crazy noise. Sounded like the axle had popped out and was grinding spline to spline while trying to propel the car down the road. I pulled over, called a ride, and haven't been feeling well enough to visit the car today. The last thing the car did was act like the brake was on when I tried to reposition it in the parking spot. The trans fluid was good the day before and the trans has about 12k on a Subaru installed reman unit.
So I have read here and there people mentioning that the front diff shells on them. Without actually looked at the problem I was just wondering what the symptoms of a bad front diff would be. I am too new to Subs with awd to make assumptions. I am curious how the input shaft of the trans and the pump isn’t destroyed if they are part of the diff. I had been thinking about 4.44's, but don't have the time to deal with something like that. I need a vacation!

Let us know what you find out. It does sound like it could be a front diff. Good luck and hope you feel better.

I Thought that a Suby rebuild of the AT included the front diff as well in the warrantee and all the gears in the AT. The front diff has shimming procedure to get the backlash correct. This should be done as a standard on the rebuilt AT.
Take care, John
