A top mount intercooler would be a really bad idea without some sort of hood scoop I'd imagine.

Do you have to worry about oil and coolant flow with it mounted differently than originally intended?
Danny whoever told you that wasn't looking at the right thing. Same bore and stroke. |

The only thing I might wonder about is bleeding either fluid system, but even the factory configurations don't really seem to make any special allowances for that so I believe it's not a concern. (It doesn't seem to be a problem in jet aircraft engines, which is fundamentally the same thing, though I'm pretty sure they have at least a few design features an automotive turbo doesn't. ) |

Well bleeding the oil is not something I've ever really thought of especially considering it's an open system anyway. Coolant though would be a problem if the turbo was mounted too high.
If the angle of the turbo was too far one way or another the oil would have a harder time flowing through it, I know you can't turn a rotrex or vortech too much, each individual one has it's own spec, but didn't know about a turbo. They're essentially the same thing though. |

-THAWA, Maybe he just want a double check, I don't know ...
Regarding turbos and their mount, yes you CAN mount a turbo in many positions/directions ...but.... you need to make sure you use the right turbo! There are some special turbos that can be mounted vertically and so on, we use them in snowmobiles. They are self lubricated, closed loop, and have ballbearings. This mean they are not affected by the engine lubrication system, and can be mounted virtually anywhere/anyhow ....and... they spool up very nicely because of their "vane" system. An ordinary turbo have to be mounted so that the oilflow (return path) in not disrupted, if it is, the oil leaks out from the bearings into the compressor housings. Regarding gears in the compressor axle, consider this: the axle revs approx 150,000 rpm's ..... imagine the losses in the gears, remember it's squared with the rpm! PS. Sorry for my BAD english.... /Sonny

I PM'd this to Danny, but thought I'd post it here....
These come from a Chiltons Manual: The EG33 has a bore and stroke of 3.82"x 2.95" CR of 10.1:1 The EJ22 has a bore and stroke of 3.82"x 2.95" CR of 9.5:1 The EJ22T has a bore and stroke of 3.82"x 2.95" CR of 8.0:1 Thought it might be of initrest to other readers of this thread....
