Removing TC from a seized engine...
Anybody have any ideas on how I can remove the torque converter from a seized engine? I've got the tranny off and the engine's still in the car. It's a Cash-4-clunkers SVX so the engine is locked up SOLID-- can't turn it to get the TC bolts to an accessible place! It's in a U-pull yard so I can't go in with any power or cutting tools. Any suggestions?

Re: Removing TC from a seized engine...
oh damn.... so you cant bring in any tools at all? not even hand tools?
if you can my suggestion would be a small hacksaw and a big ass prybar, the good thing is that the flexplate on our cars are abuot 3/16" thick so it wont be an issue with not getting the thing to bend, try seeing if you can possibly cut the bolts or the flexplate metal around the bolt and try prying it off. Chances are its an older flexplate so you might get lucky and have the thing snap on you . Another thing might be to try and break the bolts that mount the plate to the engine but they are closer together so it would be more of a challenge.

Cordless power tools are OK-- I thought about drilling out the bolts from the backside, but I don't think the batteries for my drill would last that long.

take multiple battery packs or make a cord to run it straight off the car battery (if its a 12v drill )

ya i dunno i dont think you'll do well with a drilling it out, unless you drilled out the center and put a punch in and then hammer it, personally i'd get a cordless angle grinder!.... on that note, a metal cutting dremel bit?

Re: Removing TC from a seized engine...
drop.tranny. and the tc will slide out of it and stay on the flywheel then tranny out of the way should be easer to get to. thats what i would do if i could not put a breaker bar on the front crank bolt with a long pipe

Re: Removing TC from a seized engine...
You say the tranny is already out, so take a big pry bar, and break the flexplate then you can access the bolts....
