The 870 comes in many configurations from an 18 inch barrel version for home law enforcement/home protection with 6 to 8 shot capacity to the regular hunting 3 shot version. There is a big aftermarket supply of parts for these that include hand grips and like you say--folding stocks.

Do you see that switch close to the trigger in your picture? Is this the trigger safe lock or a selector for semi automatic mode? The one offered to me has the same switch on it, but i remember it in an upper position, above the trigger, but i may be wrong.
You can easily buy larger capacity aftermarket magazines and even some Army surplus military magazines.

The selector switch is the safety switch. The fully automatic version has different trigger mechanisms.

The pictured older weapon above has nothing to do with the M1/M2/M3 carbines. It apparently just happens to have the same .30 cal designation and probably not even compatible, but I would guess it to be a late 1800s/early 1900s rifle and probably not even military.

Re: Guns anyone? U.S Carabine cal 30

The carbine you are talking about, was in New Zealand issued to officers as a replacement for the previously issued, cumbersome 45 Webley revolver. Both were useless from a practical point of view. In action, it was usual for an officer to quickly acquire a real rifle, i.e. a .303 Le Enfield.

Get some more info on it, there are tons of 870's out there. A wingmaster is not the home defense 6-8 shot version. It is a 5 shot with a 26" or 28" vent rib barrel (assuming it's a 12 gauge). A bird gun. Nevertheless, it is a higher end 870 with better finish and wood, and worth double your asking price.
You can't really go wrong with an 870. Great guns. I have 2 of them and they are dependable workhorses. Most of my friends hunt with them as well.
