Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

I need to replace the front windshield on my 96 SVX and am running into a problem. I found a place that can actually get the windshield, but there is a plastic gasket that runs around the perimeter of the windshield that seems impossible to get. I'm not sure if its part of the windshield or a separate part, but my windshield guy says that its simply not available. I thought maybe it could just be detached from my windshield and re-used, but it doesn't look like its something that detaches from the windshield. Anyone else have this problem and any ideas where to get this gasket? Thanks.

Yes, it gets reused.

Unless you get a new OEM windshield then it comes with one.

We have looked into getting them produced, but nobody really wants to make them. Not a big enough project and sales for them.

I will be saving mine from my parts car as the windshield is already cracked so I can just break the glass and get the gasket out without it breaking or cracking to have as a spare just in case.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

I am confused about the windshield options. I just cracked my bronze windshield on my 94 Barcelona Red LSi
I was aware from this forum that bronze windshields are no longer available, but I asked my Subie dealer to see if there are ANY SVX windshields available and to confirm that they dont come with the molding. He called back and said the bronze and blue glass part numbers have been replaced with a CLEAR glass part number, and the molding has a part number and appears to be available seperately. Is this true?

I am confused- can we still get bronze as an aftermarket glass and can we order the molding from Subaru- or do we have to use the old molding from the old glass?
Or can you get a clear glass and get it tinted?

The service mgr at the dealreship said he thought there would be problems re-using old molding, getting a good seal etc.

I am trying to figure out what the heck to do. I have 250 comp deductible on my insurance.

Question: What would your advice be if this was your car?
any info or suggestions, most appreciated

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

The gasket they are talking about does in fact have a separate part number and can be ordered separately but that is not the full windshield moulding. The actual moulding for the windshield only comes with a new OEM windshield from Subaru. If you go aftermarket or used, you will need to save and reuse the existing moulding from your car.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

When I replaced my windshield last year the local dealer told me I bought the third last windshield in the world or at least offered by Subaru. I really don't know if he meant in the world or available from Subura USA, either way there are not many left.

I also had a local auto glass dealer order one for me only to find out that it did not have the gasket/moulding around the doors. He said he could try and save the old gasket/moulding but would not guarantee if it would seal properly. I don't have any first hand knowledge if this can be done but would appreciate any feedback from people that have done this.

Question...I have a parts car with a perfect windshield, has anyone take one out and reused it? How difficult is it?

BTW...I really appreciate the forum and the people sharing all their experiences/knowledge with the SVX community.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

I had mine replaced by Diamond glass and it was done without the gasket. They use a sealer that is black and turns into a hard rubber. No it's not silicone, it's more grainier and has a flat finish. They gave me a life time warranty and it doesn't look too bad.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

yes, i value this forum also!

(it seems like some people are referring to the gasket and moulding as same thing, but Nate saying they are separate items? What exactly is a gasket as opposed to moulding?)

I wonder if the Subie dealer can order a clear windshield and if it will come with the moulding, then perhaps I could get it tinted? (I am having hard time imagining a clear windshield without any tint, that seems weird)

Basically, I would prefer a bronze windshield of course but more importantly, I want a good seal on my windshield and one that looks ok . I too would like to know if you could buy a parts windshield from someone who is selling one, and can it be installed correctly? I would be willing to drive across country and pick up a used bronze windshield if this is the best solution.

I posted this at the same time dann marr posted (above) so maybe that is the solution- black rubber seal

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

Trust me, the moulding needed only comes with replacement OEM windshields directly from SOA. It cannot be ordered separately and does not come with aftermarket windshields. Just search "windshield replacement" and you will see this in just about every thread where it is discussed.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

Yes, I understand what you are saying, I have read all the posts also over the years.
But I still dont know what the "gasket" is that people are referring to, it sounds like the item my Subie service mgr was talking about as being available... but he called it moulding. Hence my confusion.
And I am still hoping someone will chime in if they have replaced their windshield with a used one (with moulding intact) and if so, how hard is this to do.

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

Anyone have any update on windshields and the hard black rubber MOLDING which is the part that comes already attached to the Subaru supplied windshields but NOT with the after-market suppliers of windshields. There seems to be some supply of after market windshields from time to time, BUT the issue is preserving the old molding and reusing it because Subaru doesn't make or sell the molding separately from the windshield. In practice the old moldings often crack or tear because they were glued to the windshield at the factory.

Has anyone tried to buy, source, have made an aftermarket molding?? This would seem to solve a lot of problems if SVX owners could buy the molding as a discrete part from some supplier. Apparently it's close to some universal moldings known as a T105 or a T107. The molding shouldn't cost more than $25-50 retail (and that's a rip for a 10 foot piece of hard rubber with two corners, but it would sure make the whole windshield replacement issue easier. Aftermarket and salvage windshields could be used. Saving -- about $1000 or more compared with Subaru's price!

PS. I need a windshield in Calgary, Canada!! Any suggestions??

Re: Front Windshield Glass / Gasket

Your right. There should be some aftermarket options or something easier to work with here instead of what you've already got. I think the aftermarket windshields should come with the damn gasket or whatever already on the som*****.
