Here's the lowdown: I bought directly from the AutoZone Web site (upon realizing that the new parts shop in town was actually an Advance, not AutoZone. Hey, they both begin with "A"). Ordered 9/14, received 9/21, FedEx Ground. Cost was $169.99 plus Georgia sales tax for a total of $181.89. No shipping charge.

To anyone with misgivings about using non-Subaru-branded parts, the TPS is visually identical to the one that came off the car, right down to the manufacturer's serial number moulded inside the housing. (Of course, it is possible the thing had been replaced before.) Twelve-month warranty. Made in Japan.

I've not driven the car enough to declare it cured, but it has performed flawlessly.

UPDATE: The new throttle position sensor completely eliminated the gear hunting I was experiencing with this car, and I've not noticed a single instance of harsh 1-2 shifting under moderate acceleration from a stop, as frequently happened before the part was replaced. It seems slightly more pedal is now required to force a downshift, and I'm guessing maybe this could be altered by rotating the sensor a bit this way or that, but I doubt I'll bother.
