Catalytic Converters

I recently bought a 1992 SVX, and had to jack up the rear end because it has been making a noise while accelerating and found the problem to be one of the catalytic converters has been dented in. Anyways, while it has been up in the air, I noticed it has 4 catalytic converters on it, why is there so many? Does it really need that many? Wouldnt it decrease performance to have so many? Can any be removed and put straight pipes in? Like the dented one? Thanks

There are only 3 cats. The first 2 are pre cats, the 2-1 is the main cat, And the last one you see is just a resonator. I had custom pipes made to replace the front 2 cats and put on a magnaflow 2-1 cat in place of the stock unit. You actually lose performance from taking off all the cats due to the fact our engines seem to like having a little backpressure. Where are you in Ohio?

Here is the exhaust system diagram. Which one and just how dented is your converter? Are you sure it is the converter that is dented and not the heat shields that surround them?

It is actually the resonator that is making the noise then. It is no longer dented but still making the noise. Does this just need to be replaced?
I'm from Columbus.

I recently replaced my resonator with a straight pipe. The buzzing mine made is gone, but the car is definitely louder. I'd call it 'flatulent.' I've even heard it make a few muffled pops if I rev it.

I'd rather the car was dead quiet, but it's better than the buzzing.

if you just want a cheap fix go with a straight pipe. If you want it to still be quiet have them put a glasspack in there.

Did you see any performance loss/gain after removing the resonator?

Yes, removing the pre cats will give you buzzing, resonation. I have straight pipes welded in. I get it around 3k rpm. Hindsight! Very annoying.

Anybody had any success using aftermarket pre-cats ? Which model?

a glasspack is just a straight thru tube type resonator. Usually only abour 4" diameter and packed with fiberglass around the edges. Most auto parts stores will sell them right over the counter. Any good muffler shop will have them in stock. Summit racing or Jegs sells them cheap also.
