Is there anyone who is a DJ?

or who has a good knowledge of low cost DMX controlled intelligent lighting equipment?

What I am looking for is a reasonably bright moving light (bright enough to punch through an evenly lit stage) which is dimmable that can have some effects controllable (color, gobos or movement) that doesn't cost more than $500 per head (or $750 per head MSRP).

The equipment I have seen so far is either out of my price range (Martin Mac250) or too dim to be useful. Any suggestions?

I used to do theatre lighting when the first robotic lights were coming on the market. They were big and gloriously expensive. At the time there were dozens of types of simple instruments that did just one thing. These days it looks like things have moved on a little...

Me too...back in the late 80's. Some professional work, but mostly college & community theatre. A friend went to work for Vari-Light in 91, but now I notice they are selling their lights now.

My biggest complaint w/ the equipment now is the light output and the cheesiness of the lights. All I want is a well built instrument, a bright source, diotic (sp?) filters, a moveable head and none of the extra crap, like gobo's; all for less than $1000.

So Mr. Pockets....where and when did you do theatre lighting?

Are you strictly a DJ or do you do mixing for theatre and/or concerts?

My family's business is Times Square Lighting. We may have some of these Griven Acrobat 250's in our warehouse that we never sold. If interested, send me a PM and I will check on Monday. I will be away for the next few days, so I won't be able to check until then.

Of course, we are also a dealer for American DJ and cheaper brands like that I can probably get special pricing on.

Believe it or not, high school. We had a very well-equipped theatre. Professional everything. I can't imagine they still let the students do the stuff we did back then, swinging from catwalks and acoustic clouds 30ft up.

I almost went to school for theatre lighting - enrolled and everything. Then at some point I picked this...desk job. I mean, it's not terrible, as far as desk jobs go.

I used to work on the day crews at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee setting up and tearing down big concerts, before they went union. I set up the biggest show on the road at the time, Reba McEntire - 16 semis. Of course it had to go up and then back down again in about 18 hours. I don't think I've ever been so tired.

So what's wrong with lighting instruments these days? ETC was just coming on the market when I switched gears, and they were making good stuff at the time.
