Wow, surprised how many people dislike the Gateway product, or at least mistrust their quality.

Maybe should have mentioned this is a work computer so I didn't have control over the source - all I could do was lay out some specs & possible sources. I picked Alienware, Dell & Gateway as sources. All three were actually within a few bucks of each other on the quotes. So, it's here and it's mine, in a a sense, and I did have to agree to give up the desktop to get it...probably because I asked for such a high-end laptop. At any rate, with a 3.4GHz processor, ATI 9700 video card and 80 GB hard drive, it's an improvement over the Dell 1.6GHz desktop with integrated video card and 20GB hard drive. Now only time will tell.

For reference our call center is about 97% Dells. There are well over 1000 computers running here right now. This company also has locations all over the world.

We buy almost strictly from Dell through a corporate agreement. I'm happy enoguh with them. We do seem to replace the video cards as soon as they come in, but our requirements are...high.

Here's what I would do...get a docking station, nice external monitor, keyboard and mouse. That way when at base (whether that be home or work) you would essentially have a desktop, and then you could just un-dock it and be back in mobile-land.

It was my pleasure, no thanks needed.

I've still got two 33Mhz computers (a ZEOS and a pc-compatible MAC) in the closet, as well as a 225Mhz all-in-one mac sitting on my desk next to my HP. My wife has a HP laptop, and I bought the 108Mb wireless G networking equipment. The only computers you'll ever see on base are either Dells or Sun boxes. We still have contracts with Micron and Gateway if we ever want those, but usually Dell is the cheapest. I tried getting a couple of Toughbooks ordered last year, but the commander said they cost too much, so we ended up with two of those thin silver dell laptops- not exactly equal to the toughbooks for what I wanted them for- Deployments. For some reason, I really want an apple. My wife and I decided that when I get my re-enlistment bonus, we're going all out on a Mac. I'm thinking we're going to spend around $5-6,000 when we're all done. Not what I really want to spend, but I want one so much. In retrospect, the hp I'm using I bought in Best Buy for $680. It was a floor model and the only one they had with a non-integrated video card and with an AMD processor. I bought it about a year and a half ago (2GHz), still running the original install of xp, and still runs great. When I get home though, I'm going to pick up a g-3 powerbook. IMO the best looking apple laptop.

I made my first website from a 33mhz gateway with a 28.8 modem - That 166 is a peach!

IIT (www.iit.edu) still have a bbs that is powered by a Pent. 133. And it's uptime has been over 7.5 years to date.

Same deal here...HP and Compaq have gone from being top of the line (years ago) to being solid, then just ok, now nearly crap. The only company I trust to build a computer right now is Dell. Even they are slipping. Oh and i'm sure Alienware is great, but there's no reason to pay twice the normal price of a computer just so it can be Alien Green.

MAC is pointless unless you have a very specific use for it. Even my brother down at SCAD in Georgia uses a PC as his main system. He said MAC is great for graphics, but since everything else he does is PC oriented, he would need two computers. So why not just use a pumped up PC which does just as good?

If you only use 1 MAC application then it might be a good idea to look into PearPC. I've used that program to "boot OS 10.3.4" in Windows XP.

Granted it's slower than an actual MAC due to emulation but for a single application it's kinda cool and quite useable.

If you want an expensive ($40-$80k) computer, then check out http://www.go-l.com But man, if I ever hit the lotto, I would be owning one of those, along with their 69" Cinerama display
