Black connector for Code Check

Hi all

I'm having difficulty locating the "16 pin black"connector to perfrom the engine code check. Keeping in mind that I have a JDM Right hand drive model 1992 (in New Zealand), and that I am talking about the driver's side kick panel:

I've found 2 black connectors, 10 and 20 pin. Plus the 2 blue wires.
Also 2 black wires, one with a white stripe that have mating connectors but are not connected.
Also one 8 pin orange connector.
And one blue with white stripe old style metal pin/socket connector that was taped up beside the blue wires.

Can anyone tell me what these are all for?

Cheers muchly in advance.

Matt

The answer is nigh....

OK. The black 10 pin is the baby. 1 & 2 deal with the engine.(2 is the read pin and 1 and 2 together clear the memory)
5,6 & 7 are for steering diags. Not sure of the other pins. Anyone??

The big black connector - dunno.
The orange one - ditto - along with the others as detailed in my post above.
I hope the above info helps someone.

Matt

Matt,
The large connector is for the "Select Monitor," which is the diagnostic tool used by Subaru Dealerships. Not sure about the orange one.

RE: connectors

Matt,
The very large black connector is the "manufacturer connector"...only used to test new vehicle on assembly line. The orange one is the "select monitor". I also noticed the single wire with the old style female bullet connector on my car, and can't find anything about it in my service manuals.

To read the codes, you turn the ignition off, insert one of the blue leads (doesn't matter which one) into no.1 or no.2 hole on the small black connector. One hole is for "read" the other is for "D-Check". Either hole will get you the codes, but the "D-Check" requires running the engine above 2000rpm for about 40 seconds. I just did this on my car last night, and got 3 codes.....2 of which I already knew about.

Anyway, hope this helps. Sorry for the long winded response

Dave

Thanks for that guys.
Hey Dave, could you give me some more info on the D-check?
I've also been trying to clear a code that I know about and have sorted (pin 1 & 2) but it won't clear, (and the CE light isn't coming on). connect to 1 & 2 and then start engine, right??

Matt

After connecting the pins, you have to drive the car above 10 mph(?) and it has to be warmed up for the codes to clear. The CEL does a flashy thing when you drive and the codes clear. I don't have the write-up here. That's the way it works on my 92 LS-L.

Where's Joe? Is it a holiday in Ireland?

I received an e-mail from Joe the other day. His father passed away, so, he has been with family.

I don't know about the European spec models, but, the self diagnosis on the US models calls the self diagnostic "U-Check" and the select monitor diagnosis "D-Check." Quite cutsie, actually (U-Check as in "You Check" and D-Check as in "Dealer Check.")

Actuall, "D-check" is not the select monitor check. That plugs into the yellow plug.

With the "u-check", you simply plug one of the blue leads into the #2 hole (i think), and turn the ignition on (engine off), and the codes will be displayed.

With the "D-check", you plug a lead into the #1 hole, start the engine, and either drive it a few miles, or run it over 2000rpm for 40 seconds, and the codes will start displaying.

I picked up a set of full service manuals from subaruparts.com for a little over $200 for my 94 recently, and of course it has all this info in it. I think it was a good price, and totally invaluble if you like to work on your own car. Unfortunately, I don't have them here with me at work as I type this, so I can't give you perfectly garranteed specifics. I'll bring them with me tomorrow, and correct anything I might have missed quoted.

That's okay. I'm not disputing. I was also trying to recall from the Factory Service Manuals. It was the first purchase I made after buying the car.

Here's a thread where I posted the self-diag and quoted from the manual. Seems as there are actually three "modes."

Now we're getting into the meaty bits!!
Good on ya fellas, I'll do that so called D-check I think.

I'm still puzzled on what the two single black wires are for, and all the pin designations on the 10pin connector (apart from 1,2,5,6,7)which we know.

The climate control temperature units connector is in the opposite kick panel, isn't it.

Thanks for your help

Does it really need a connector? All you need to do to check those codes is to hold those 2 buttons when turning on the ignition right?

There is a connector in the opposite kick panel that is either connected (or not connected, I can't remember which way round) that changes your climate control temperature from degrees celcius to farenhite. Tricky stuff, ain't it.
