Overheating question

My 92 SVX's temp. guage is going crazy in stop and go traffic. I can drive for an hour on the highway and the needle never goes above halfway. As soon as I get off the highway and hit a couple stop lights is starts to slowly climb towards the red. Once I get back up to about 40MPH for over 15 sec. or so the gauge goes back down (very quickly).

Anybody know what would be causing this?

hmmm...how about 1 or more bad fans? possibly a fan relay? failing water pump?

Try running the car with the A/C on. Both fans should turn.

Overheating

1. Do you have coolant? (had to ask)
2. Does you're fan turn on?
3. Is the top hose (return hose) hot? Can you push it in while the car is running and then feel a wooosh as the fluid passes when you let it go? This will tell you if your thermostat is working.

If you answered yes to all of these things then it is probably beyond you're abilities so take it to the garage very very soon.
A head gasket going is gonna be real expensive if you keep driving it like that!!!

If the car is running and the AC is on then both fans should be on right. Because the passenger side fan is not coming on when I do this. Sounds like this is probably the culprit especially since it seems to be fine when traveling at decent speeds.

How should I go about fixing this.

Thanks!!

well now you need to determine if the fan is failing or the relays. there's another thread on this subject and it explains how to resolve the issue.

I assume you are referring to this thread:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...ight=fan+relay

That is one heck of a thread. It sounds like it almost eneded very abruptly with some strong feelings. Glad it didn't, there is some very valuable info. in there. I will start investigating tomorrow.

Thanks again!!

I had another subaru that was doing exactly the same thing: ocasionally the coolant temperature was rising without reason.

Bad news!

It was the head gasket. One indication is if your water level goes down and if you have steam coming out of the exhaust.

There was no problem at the beginning but it accentuated and at the end it was obvious.

Check that (hope you have something much simple- fan failure).

Question What does your coolant overflow bottle look like?

If its black and gooey and smells like exhaust, it's time for headgaskets.
