Used Transmissions from Japan?

Has anyone had any experience with the low mileage transmissions from Japan? I have found two legacy wagons available in the year range with the 4.44 drive trains for the changout process, but they have 255k and 260k on them, and I'm not sure about going with either of them.
I also have been in touch with someone who is prepared to change out my transmission for a 35k mile 4eat. I really want to get the car back on the road this summer, but don't want to get hung up again because of a high mileage fix. Thoughts?

Re: Used Transmissions from Japan?

my experience with the used transmissions and engines from japan has been mixed. they seem of ok quality but there are quite a few differences that can make install time consuming. don't know why but little things like bolt patterns and electrical connectors are always different.

Re: Used Transmissions from Japan?

For a JDM transmission to work, you need the trans, the proper trans mounts, the MATCHING JDM TCU to the transmission as the C solenoid signal was reversed somewhere in the production (I want to say either 94 or 95). You also need a 3.70 rear diff to match the trans/front diff. And I'm probably forgetting something else.

CAN it work? yes
Financially does it make any sense? No, not really.
Also, I don't trust any of the mileages they say for the JDM engine/transmissions. For any car, no matter what year, they always claim that it's around 40k miles. :READ: They have no clue how many miles/KM are on the parts.

Another thing to keep in mind. It's well known that failures in the 70k mile range and less(often times before 50k miles) are commonplace in 92 transmissions worldwide. So I wouldn't bother unless you really want the VTD transmission for what it is.

They will work ok, just have to change the front speed sensor for a SVX Hall one, but the mileage is a bit high.
I would try for a lower mileage one.

Harvey.

Re: Used Transmissions from Japan?

Thanks for the updates. This is the feedback I was looking for to make the move, or not.
