Re: daily calendar
I am, apparently, a person of color.
I was pink and truly pure at birth. I have been black and blue for most of my like. (Catholic upbringing) Found out back in 1975 that I was "whitie" in my diverse(getto)neighborhood. Later passed for a Mexican, much to the consternation of my "Upper Class" girlfirends friends...again Worked south (MD) in 1987... "You ain't from here is ya, boy!" Moved south (WV)in 1992... "You ain't from here is ya, boy!" Developed a red neck along the way... Saw RED! Went gray... Had the blues. Never went GREEN! But since 1983, I have had, and loved, and respected Subarus! What the hell, can't we all just get along?!

Re: daily calendar
That's very white of you for posting that, Trevor.
Hey, I've a question, seeing as I'm from out of state. Tom might know the answer with his colorful background. Is it impossible for blacks to be rednecks? Joe

Re: daily calendar
Quote:
American Redneck "I am a redneck myself, born and bred on a submarginal farm in Appalachia, descended from an endless line of dark-complected, lug-eared, beetle-browed, insolent barbarian peasants, a line reaching back to the dark forests of central Europe and the alpine caves of my Neanderthal primogenitors." -- from"In defense of the Redneck" from Abbey's Road by Edward Abbey The term "Redneck" has a long and illustrious history although today many people think of it as a pejorative description for rural people. In fact, if you look up redneck in any current dictionary, you will find it shown as slang with its disparaging meanings. But originally, "redneck" stood for the concepts of freedom and self-determination. We here at Save the Redneck want to help restore the original meaning of the word, and we want to honor rednecks in every state, and in every walk of life, with the respect that heritage and adherence to redneck values bestows. We think that once you read this brief but well researched history you will understand why rednecks everywhere deserve to proclaim, "Proud to be a redneck." One of the values that a redneck holds true is the concept of individual freedom. The Covenanters of 17th century Scotland prescribed to this ideology and are the true founders of the "Redneck" movement. The Covenanters rejected the Church of England as their sanctioned church. In doing so, they also refused to be ruled by bishops which was the conventional method of church government. Many of the self determined Covenanters signed documents with their own blood that rejected episcopacy and demanded a Presbyterian Church government. To show their allegiance in this movement the Covenanters began wearing red pieces of cloth around their necks and were appropriately called "Rednecks." Out of defiance, the original redneck was born. The American redneck is a direct descendant of these fiercely independent people. The Scotch-Irish migrated from Ulster to the American colonies in the 18th century. They were the first immigrants to settle in the bountiful Appalachian Wilderness and large parts of the South. They were characterized by their distinct Scotch-Irish heritage, language and distinct ability to craft anything they needed out of the rough landscape. They were a resourceful group of honorable people who maintained their old ways and carried forth the proud title of redneck. Throughout history the term redneck has continuously evolved. In 17th century, Virginia slave laborers were exposed to the sun while working on the plantations. The lifelong sun exposure turned skin into leathery red necks--hence another layer of meaning to the term and its association with hard work. The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 in western Pennsylvania was an armed conflict ignited by furious backwoods rednecks who were being unfairly taxed for distilled spirits. Large whiskey producers were taxed six cents per gallon while the smaller rural distillers were taxed a dishonest nine cents per gallon. West Virginia and Kentucky coal miners are famous rednecks known for their battles against corrupt mining companies that refused to implement fair wages, worker safety and the right to unionize. The stereotype of an ignorant and unmotivated redneck is shattered in the unveiling light of history. For centuries, rednecks have honored hard work, fairness, and the inherent right to individual freedom. Rednecks have fought to provide a decent living for their families and maintain their dignity and self-respect. The term redneck no longer applies only to Appalachian and Southern rural working class people. A redneck might be a construction worker, mechanic, logger, rancher, hunter--or an artist, attorney, grocery checker, full time mom, astronaut or musician. In fact, anyone who rolls up his or her sleeves to keep the economical wheels turning in this country may be a redneck. If you consider yourself a redneck, remember that there is a deep history of earnest people who sacrificed and put their livelihoods on the line to give you the right to be called a redneck.
