5 speed conversion
What all do I need in order to do the 5 speed conversion? I've been steered clear of the Smallcar kit, was directed here by Hocrest :-) I'm gettin a 92 SVX with a "blown tranny" next month... He says it won't move anywhere under it's own power and acts like it's in neutral all the time, said to make sure you set the parking brake, leads me to believe it might be stuck in neutral or something... He said it had some trans work done to it + new brakes and axles and tires, so I figure broken or not it's worth the asking price :-) lol I don't even know what color it is, other than it has gray leather interior :-P
Any input on the MT conversion (Haven't decided 5MT or 6MT yet) would be greatly appreciated! |

TomsSVX is the guy to talk to, I'm sure he'll chime in here in a little while. He can sell you a complete 5MT kit, or even do the swap for you.
Good luck with the car! They're awesome machines. Wish I had a 5MT....

Tom did my 5MT, and i love it. Shifts are perfect, much zippier, so much more control. It feels like the car was meant to have been a manual trans.
I wouldn't count so much on having tom do the swap for you though, it would cost you in gas there and back half the cost of the trans swap itself. He does have an extensive write-up in his locker though, sells a kit that comes with everything you need minus trans, pedal box, and a couple other small things. Best of luck to you!

Well, I read his write-up and saw that I need to modify the drive shaft... I remember from reading the smallcar.com instructions that they send you a spacer that goes between the drive shaft and the rear end... My friend has a lathe and a mill, so I could easily make a spacer...
Doing the swap's not the problem, it's getting the parts and stuff to do it with! I've done an auto to manual swap before, but it was in a car that was available from the factory with a manual (82 GL) so it wasn't all that difficult.

You can just get the front haft of a 95-99 legacy mt drive shaft. Thats what I did. All you have to do is swich the legacy carier bearing out for the SVX one. I think that if you use a spacer you have to relocate the carier bearing mount. With Tom's kit its allmost a bolt in swap. The hardess part for me was geting the holes for the cluch in the right spot and moving the brake lines out of the way.

So what am I looking at in terms of $$$? I can get a pretty good deal on things @ the junkyard here since my work deals with them on a regular basis, and I have a friend that used to work at one of the other yards around here (Which has a smashed green SVX in the yard ) that knows who to talk to in order to get smokin deals on stuff... But what all do I need in terms of your kit? What's it come with and how much does it cost?

A search will find you Toms thread about 5MT kits... there is also a wealth of info in the How-To Docs on the link in the upper right hand corner of the site.
