Question about a noise

when the ac is on...It almost sounds like there is a pulley loose in the front of then engine when the ac is on...Only when the ac is on though, soon as you turn it off the "knock"sound goes away...any ideas as to what this might be??could it be the pulley or a pulley???if so is it the one i can replace with a lighter one for a little more hp???thanks for any help, itss greatlyu appreciated

since it's ONLY when the A/C is on, I'm guessing something in the clutch mechanism for the compressor and/or the compressor bearings. Either way it don't sound cheap to me. There has been a guy posting A/C compressors for the SVX on Ebay, but as to quality, etc?????

OK, I'll bite again

It could also be an idler pulley used to keep the belt tight (that would be a lot cheaper). I think you have to be out front with the hood open and have somebody kick the air on & off and narrow down where the sound is coming from.

If it's an idler pulley failing you MIGHT be able to actually see some belt wandering. If you have a long screwdriver or some other metal rod, put one end on the compressor and the other to your ear (stethoscope like) and listen for interior vibration noises like a bad bearing sound. Just don't get it stuck in any rotating parts.

Sorry to add this but I had that exact noise when I would turn my a/c on. $1000 later it was fixed. (new pump)

A knockiing sound sounds like the piston in the compressor. Not good. Mine has a clutch getting noisy. I'll have to deal with that soon.

Does anyone know about the oil for the a/c compressor? Should oil be added at some point, say after 100k miles?
