Alternator Mod (Reading Attendees)

OK, for those of you going to Reading, that have the know how... What do I need to bring with me to Reading in order to get this job done? I have very few tools, as I rent an Apartment and I dont have any close friends with work space.

All I would like is a list of what I need to get it done, and possibley a little guidance while I do this @ Reading... Any takers?

If you're like most of us on this forum, you don't have ANY close friends (except for us on this forum).

8 feet of 4-gauge wire is more than enough, with six 5/16" ring connectors (one for each end of the 3 cables you're gonna fabricate). As for tools, you'll need a wire stripper or a pocketknife, a crimping tool or a pair of pliers, and metric wrenches to undo the bolts you're gonna connect the connectors to.

You could really go way out on the quality continuum and crimp AND solder the connectors, and probably dress the installation up in all kinds of ways, but I think I covered the basics.

svxcess has a great description and pics in his locker - his is a very clean and professional install.

BTW - I won't be at Reading, so if this blows up in your face, you can't do anything about it.

It really doesn't take long at all. If you want to have the wires fabricated by your local stereo shop it is a lot easier. You will need a 23" wire (measured from the center of each conector) to go from the alternator to the positive battery post, a 16" wire (measured center-to-center) from the a/c compressor mounting bolt to the negative post of the battery, and finally a 13" wire to go from the negative battery post to frame ground.

My stereo shop charged me $20.00 for all the cables, with gold plated end rings and shrink tubing to cover the crimped terminals.

I personally did 3 alternator wiring mods at Lafayette last year. the last one being at 3:00am. I felt like a surgeon with 4 members surrounding the engine bay shining flashlights.

Most auto parts stores will carry packaged pre cut wires with the ends already on them - ready to install. They are specifically for battery connection and are heavy gauge. This is how I did mine. Just look for the length svxcess described. These will only cost $5-10

The hard part in taking this route is finding the appropriate length with the proper ring connections. In my travelss I hace found 24" with rings on moth ends and the shortest ones for the other connections were 18-19"

They do make shorter ones with the ring connector on one end and the conventional battery post connector on the other end.
