Replacement Engine - Transmission

Just had to have the engine on my 92 LSL replaced at 260k miles. Somewhat disappointed, as I had always had the oil changed every 2k miles.

Found a used engine, seems OK. The question I didn't ask was if there are any other engines that are a good/easy replacement when this one fails? I don't think there are many left out there.

The same question occurs to me about the transmission, which I've had rebuilt/replaced twice. Is the Impreza transmission interchangeable? I also vaguely remember that the first two SVX had manual transmissions, and there was a shop (perhaps in Oregon?) that did swaps from automatic to manual. Does anyone have info or thoughts on this?

The SVX was never sold with a manual transmission.
