Unhappy Engine dies when put into gear

I have searched the forum a little but haven't been able to find what exactly is happening to me...... I started my car a few minutes ago and when i put it in reverse the car died... I did this about 2 times and then started the car in nuetral... Then i tried to put it into drive and the same thing happened . Anyone know what this is because i really have no idea ... Any help is appreciated, even if it is a link to this topic already being discussed because i couldnt find it myself....

I wonder if it could be the temp sensor. Does it give you trouble trying to start up at all or does it start up fine and then die?

If its idling rough before it dies it may be the mass air flow sensor.

Gidáy Jen,
Its either the converter is locked up, or the idle is having problems.
When you put it into gear, does it bump like the converter is locked., or does it just die like it dosen't have the power to keep going?
Does it make a difference if you let warm up for a while, before you put it into gear?
What happens if you raise the idle speed, by holding the throttle down a bit, as you pull it into gear?( just be carfully you don't drive through the garage wall).

Harvey.

Well yesterday we jacked up the car... and larry couldn't find whatever he thought it was... so he let the car down and popped the hood.... He looked at the engine and decided to try the car.... And after all that "work" it worked fine... weird...

Maybe is was just an idling thing that cleared up.

Does this problem happen when the engine is warm or only after it sat overnight?

Well it hasn't done it since, but it was after sitting overnight. Would this have anything to do with an alternator??? I know the bearing in mine has been going for a while but hasn't cause me too much trouble..

That's what my car did when the engine temperature sensor failed.

My car has done a few random things in its life... im just geussing with my luck on day they're all going to brake lol... Otherwise the fact they fix themselves after doing it once wouldnt make sense, its a conspiracy, every part in my car is planning something BIG ...

Lets just hope its not any time soon!

I know exactly what he is talking about and I am convinced it is converter lock up. It only happens at cold start conditions and never when warm. There is a noticable jolt when shifting into gear. I just try to let it warm up a little longer. It never has happened to me shifting into forward so I will sometimes shift through reverse in forward first, Perhaps that unlocks the converter.
But who knows what really goes on in the devious little mind of an SVX.

Yes you are right. It is the converter staying locked and for me it also helped to shift into D first before going into R. This problem went away immediately after replacing the engine temperature sensor.

If I push the car before it is warm it will idle lumpy, Seems like it does it just before the gauge moves. Once it moves it smoothes right up
