Talking NFS.'s AK Auto-X w/ SVX

Here's the breakdown on that thar race I dun did.

25 total drivers
20 some odd cars, half Subarus, some Audis, couple other things.
2 waves with 4 runs each
Tech started at nine, awards went out around 4-ish.

I was on second wave.
First wave had me watching corner four, fixing cones, relaying info, and keeping people from entering the gate.
It was sunny, but windy and pretty cold. 30 some degrees and then you have the windchill factor which brings it down to -iwishiworeasweater degrees F.

Um, so my wave hit, and I had to pee really bad the entire time. I figured it was just excitement and being nervous, not nature calling so I just ignored it.

First run I popped it in 3 manual. Went around the cones. Spun a lot of front tire. Made a time somewhere around 133 seconds.

Second run left it in drive. Went the same route. Churned it out in 135 seconds.

Third run I got adventurous. Popped it in 2 auto and used my hand brake to take corners. Did a 180 on the first turn, almost got stuck. I had to go in reverse, and I was in a hurry so I just popped it back in D. Slid around the cones came very close to knocking a bunch over, but despite my lack of traction remained in control. Pulled a time of 150 something. Bleh.

Fourth run I popped it in 3 manual, and e-braked the corners. I did much better on this run but I missed part of the track and went "off course". I knew it had happened but I didn't see where I needed to go. I must have slid really far out.

Everyone who watched my runs had something to say about my rear tires not spinnign so they think my AWD is not functioning. They say they spun once of all four runs. I think some studded tires would have helped as well.

Best lap was around 88 seconds. it was also one of the first, before the track was polished ice mid way through first wave. Average time after that for most was 110 seconds.

Yup I got dead last.
Oh well I went there to have fun and that's what I got.

Some photographer guy was there doing his thing. His photos will be posted at this site at some point:
http://www.ogdenphotos.com/winter.htm

I didn't get much of a photo opportunity. :/

I think if you kept it in 2 manual you would have been better off. If it was on pavement then keep it in 1 and do yo thang.

You might be right about that but I was hitting 4-5k rpms at every corner nomatter the gear. My problem was sliding sideways and not having traction to pick up speed.

All the other Subbes were manuals and had their diff locks going. :/

What was the course design? I've done several auto-x's and never had to use the e-brake.

Normally I'd agree with you. If the event had been run on dry pavement, I would not advise using the hand brake. But the event Nik ran seems to have been on ice and snow. On such a surface, the hand brake can be useful - but you really have to be well-practiced with it and you also have to set up for the move very carefully.

Does using the e-brake disable the AWD with the 4EAT? I was looking through the service manuals a long time ago but can't remember if the AWD system uses e-brake application as an input.

If I try to use the e-brake with the 5MT I will just lock up all 4 tires due to the AWD.

I'll have to play around on the river once the snow melts off.

My guess would be no. Pull the brake and give it gas and you'll just cause the transfer clutch some pain - especially if the front wheels are slipping a lot and the car is trying to put pressure on that clutch.

When I got home.

I don't know about you guys but when I pull the E it sends me into a fishtail for as long as I'm holding it. It was really helpful because with my unavoidable sliding I could e-brake about 15 feet before a turn and come out straight. Too bad I went off course figuring that out, though.
