Water Pump

There has been a debate on the "other" list as to how long the SVX water pump can be expected to last and whether it should be routinely replaced with the timing belt every 60,000 miles. To help settle this, I would like to poll those who have experienced failed or leaking water pumps as to at what mileage it failed or started leaking or, alternatively, when you replaced it with no leaks or failure.

I voted 65-100k (mine had 90k), but mine didn't "leak" or "fail." Instead it began to squeak and make very strange noises (sounded kind of like a dying mouse). I interpretted this as a sign it was about to go, and decided to replace it before I had any serious problems.

Yhanks. I would agree that that is a "failure." Maybe I should have labelled it "changed preventively" instead.

Mine, which was not leaky or noisy, was replaced in early spring, along with the front seals, thermostat, and timing belt. (Crank seal was leaking.) In retrospect, having never experienced a water pump failure in several high-mileage Subarus, I think I might have jumped the gun.

I'm also in the category of "Original pump" (as far as I know). I do have a brand new one still in the bag ready to go though.

I would say that if you haven't replaced it yet, and you have over 130,000 miles on it, then you could check the last category and still be honest.

wasser pump

The poll said I already voted... I didn't...ghosts The pump was changed at 120k so i'm told with no failure. It used to be a Honda hype. New T belt = new water pump. Subies seem to last longer.

I replaced mine just after 130k, but it had no prior problems.

Ironically, the new one that I installed worked for a few weeks, then suddently started leaking like a sieve.

Failed after 2 or 3k miles.
Of owning it I mean.
That would be about 83k.

Significant Technical Input

We've a member here that had his car towed to me some time ago because his water pump seized and destroyed the idlers, tensioner and belt from the resulting shock. He had a Subie dealer in CA do the service routine not long before but they neglected to change, or recommend, the pump at that time, even though they did do the belt. At around $124 - $140 for each of the idlers it doesn't make much sense to not plan on replacing the pump during the t-belt service.

cool

Look like we got a really good water pump......

My original one still runs great at 67k in a 12yrs old machine.

Hope to have many, many miles to go...

After reading Beav's post, when, when and when should I change mine? Does it have any warning before it happens? Leaking is better than seizing! Maybe I should put some 'lubricant' for the pump........
