Oil dipstick shoot up?

What is it that causes the oil dipstick to shoot up while driving the car? My '92 does this and my step-dad thinks it could be blow-by in the cylinders. Any and all help is appreciated.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX
You need a new PCV valve.....it's a $5 part, but it is a real PITA to install

Thanks huck! Ill replace the PCV valve. IM not quite sure if thats the problem though, my step-dad said he found the hose that leads to the PCV valve and it appeared to be working, sucking the air out of the hose he said he could feel the PCV valve close and blowing into the hose he said he could feel it open back up, is this the PCV valve or could it be something else?

K.I.S.S. That's keep it simple stupid which is why I can't believe Huck didn't say this first. The oil dipstick has an o-ring on the top that holds it in place. They tend to get smaller with age causing it to pop up an inch or so. If that's the case simply replace it with a new ring and you're in business. That said the PCV is supossed to be replaced every 30k or so anyways so it definately won't hurt replacing it. BUY A SUBARU ONE THOUGH as the aftermarket ones aren't liked by Subies and will probably cause more problems than the $2 savings was worth. Just remember, huck did mention that it is quite a pain to change.

Not a clue Dustin. You're looking at under $15 for both at your local stealership so personally I'd just go there. They should I think have both in stock as they are used on most later model Subies.

Yes a new O-ring will probably keep the dipstick down, but if the PCV system is working correctly, even with no o-ring the dipstick won't raise up.
So with the extra pressure in the engine, and not going out through the dipstick tube, the weakest gaskets will start leaking due to the pressure.

So I'd say do both, and then you've eliminated them both as being a problem.

Good time to replace your power steering O-ring too...as it probably needs it, if it hasn't already been replaced....

I replaced my PCV valve, but the dipstick kept moving up. The valeve was ok, but after replacing the O-ring, it stayed in just fine.

Ah but mine will pop up regardless on my 95. Even with a new PCV... and yes system is working properly. It simply rattles up.

here's the part number : #11810AA000 pcv valve
and from the schematic its under the intake manifold cover..tucked in fairly well..so yeah a PITA I just ordered mine $14..and now I see that the dipstick for most still comes up...oh goodie...

If the O-ring is replaced, they should not still come up. I have done that to close to 20 now and that has cured the problem.

I have the same problem until I order the new o-ring and valve. In the meantime I have wrapped two rubber bands around each side of the dipstick handle to keep it down in the tube.......Very redneck, but very effective.....LOL

Anyways, how difficult is the power steering O-ring replacement?
