It Can Be Done! (Head Removal)

In my locker is a picture (it's the only one in there) of my now-headless '92 Pearl. You'll notice that the engine is STILL IN THE CAR. It took 10-12 hours of work at a leisurely pace to get the heads off, and after getting the the spark plugs/coil packs and valve covers off there was plenty of space on the sides to remove the cams (required) and finally unbolt the heads. Now the trick will be getting it all back together with new head gaskets to cure my overheating and oil in the coolant woes.headless engine

why were you so desperate to keep the motor in the car? I don't know if it would have taken less time, but I would have pulled (or dropped... never done an SVX motor) that thing before I tried that.

Nice work though.

Just wondering, do you have the tools to take precise measurements?? like... thousandths of an inch? (or equiv)

Cool. Not much left of the engine in the car. :-) Were you able to see where the head gasket had failed?

Doesn't removing the engine involve disconnecting a lot more hoses, wires, and tranny? For a home mechanic on a budget, this may be a viable option. It sounds like one may even be able to accomplish the gasket change over a weekend.

Removal?

Actually from where you are with the engine that is not that much more to remove and it would have been easier provided you have an engine hoist.
