Lightbulb Re: Outgrown server

This discussion may go down as a generational "us vs. them" topic, but for access to useful information THIS SITE is the clear winner. Facebook is simply the Yahoo format with pictures. I think the lack of activity, mine included, is partly because "Every Question About an SVX Has Been Covered", and many of the Old Guard have moved on. My loyalty is to this site, & count me in for any financial help.

Like others, I belong to a number of car-nut sites. To generate more interest in here perhaps we could look at enhancing the topic lists. Much has changed in this new world of automobiles in 15 years. Many sites now include discussion topics on Electric/hybrid cars, Self-Driving technology, New maintenance products (oil/wax etc.) and would expand our interaction beyond "Other than SVX" One topic thread could be VERY useful - Where to find spare parts.

Re: Outgrown server

What do you need to get to upgrade, and at what cost? That'll give us a target to aim for in donations.

Hard to believe it's been 10+ years since we last upgraded. I remember when we did it, but it doesn't seem like 10+ years ago

Re: Outgrown server

I check the site everyday and respond to anything interesting but it has gotten pretty inactive overall. I'd hate to lose the site though.

Re: Outgrown server

I have been checking this site daily for what seems like years. I don't use FB and this site provides everything most anyone would need.

Willing to contribute.

Re: Outgrown server

I'll admit I check SVX Nation on Facebook but mainly to look at the pics or get opinions on the way something looks. As far as technical information goes this site can't be beat!! It has saved me countless hours on how to fix things and is a wealth of knowledge when searching on how to do something. You can't replace this feature with the FB groups. I've been using this site for more than 13 years and it's my go to place for SVX info. Let us know how we can help offset the cost of keeping the site going.

I'm willing to contribute $100. About to start a major mod effort. Hopefully to rival Young Tom's 246whp NA. Would hate to lose the information collected here over the last 16+ years. Just le me know where to send it.

Re: Outgrown server

I'd be willing to contribute to keep this site going. This was, and still is, my go-to place for learning just about everything in/on my SVX, and absolutely got me through my manual swap. The facebook groups are okay for quick responses to easy questions, but SVXWN is the gold mine for real info.

Plus I got to meet a lot of the members on here at the 25th anniversary meet, and it would be great to have a place to keep in touch.

Re: Outgrown server

I definitely look to this site for any technical discussion, and will continue doing so.

I have resisted signing up to fakebook, but may begrudgingly do that if only to be able to see notices about meets and touch base with people who don't sign up to forums like this. But I won't try to have technical discussions on FB. It just is not conducive to long posts or providing the ability to quickly/easily link to or jump back to an older post.

As for your server here -- Since the traffic volume here has dropped, why not switch to a web host and free yourself of the care and feeding of your own hardware? I signed up for a deal several years back for a lifetime 50% discount, and have been paying ~$22 per YEAR for "unlimited" shared basic hosting. Similar discounts are still offered regularly (particularly around Black Fridays).

What are you paying currently for your data, plus extra expenses to maintain the hardware (e.g,. electricity, extra air conditioning, etc.)?

What capabilities would you need from a web host to run this site?

Is there any reason you couldn't do that?

BTW, I'm probably not the only one who needed several days to "recover" and catch up on other work after returning home from the 25th anniversary meet. So although I'd been following this thread, this is the first chance I've had time to sit down to post replies.

ADDED: Also, on many of these vBulletin forums, when I want to just drop in briefly to check certain threads or sub-forums, I'll do that from a different browser (in other words, viewing as a "guest") so that I won't reset my 'last visited' date. Then when I have more time, I'll check back from my normal browser and hit all of the "view first unread" links, and any new threads that I'm interested in.

Re: Outgrown server

Although I'm one of the younger members of this forum (24) I do not use facebook at all and don't plan to start any time soon. When ever I need help or need info, 9 time outta 10 I can rely on this place. I often come here just to read random posts for the chance at getting new info. I cant really contribute alot of money but I'm for sure willing to give back what I can.

For the most part, the issue isn't bandwidth (sometimes we spike), but the issue is the 47 gig combined database table sizes. I have not seen shared hosting for $22/year that get along with that well. The other issue is that shared hosting servers offer a mix of PHP and MySQL capabilities and and some or most have some safe modes enabled that don't work well for some of the add ons for photo uploads and such.

The $22/year deal I got was only an example. The point is that discounted deals are regularly offered if you keep an eye out for them.

What is your budget? What are you currently paying per month, and how much are you about to spend on new hardware?

There are lots of sites running vBulletin forums out there, so I'm sure there are web hosts that can handle this site without breaking the bank.

If you can post (or send me) some more specifics on what you need, I'll be happy to help look. And no, I'm not doing that to gain any commissions; just want to help this site continue.
