Not a STINKING WORD!!

I looked at the local Time-snooze today. I read it from a-1 to the miserable end. There was not a single WORD about the day that ' Will live in Infamy'!
I will be canceling my subscription!

Pearl seems to be lost! The only paper in our area decided to 'not' cover anything related to it.
I happen to be sharing my home with a 'Vet' that was 'active' then. She is 91 years young.

I am the ONLY person she saw today that mentioned it!

Do we really suck so bad that we don't remember to THANK the ones that kept us 'FREE' so many years ago?

If it wasn't for them, we would all be speaking GERMAN or Japanese!

Keep this crap up and the new language will be CHINESE!

DAMN IT!! WE are Americans! Let's BE Americans! Don't let our 'HISTORY' die!

My Mom and Dad were sitting in a car listening to the radio. They were planning their wedding when the 'news' hit. Dad was ordered back to his base via that news report. He got a 3 day 'pass' on Dec 23-24-25, then was to report for deployment on Dec 26th.
They were married on Dec 24th.

I have seen more 'press' today on mitsubisi beating skiers down the mountain, than I have the 'results' of the mitsu airplanes that killed all those Sailors back in the 40's!

The events of yesterday are the reason we are here today, but tomorrow is the reason today is worth living.

I'm sure someone mentioned it somewhere.

You did, for one.

Re: Not a STINKING WORD!!

The anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was mentioned on NPR yesterday morning. If there was an in-depth story, I missed it. Haven't gotten around to reading yesterday's paper yet. (I'm always a few days behind.)

I'm afraid as the WWII vets and survivors pass from the scene, the horrors of that war will in the minds of most seem increasingly distant and irrelevant. The lessons will be forgotten.

Re: Not a STINKING WORD!!

Chris Berman mentioned it even on Monday Night Football!

It was certainly in my facebook status all of yesterday.

Couldn't agree more and it is a scary scenario. That generation lived through the great depression and at least one world war. They know how bad war is and they also know the value of a a strong military. Even those of us that listened to their stories with great interest and focus can only gleen the hell these people lived through. Now they can't even find a bugle or trumpet player to play taps at their funerals. Sad and scary at the same time.

While those with actual memories will fade, I think in this day of massively electrically stored media the lessons will always be instantly at hand for the future generations.
While it is a somber thought that the experiences we leave behind can not be easily transposed to others the foundation is certainly laid for a better tomorrow.

A future where war is forgotten is a bright one, in my eyes, but I don't think anyone will ever not realize that there were heroes. Maybe our names and our triumphs will fade into obscurity, but if they are obscured by progress and bliss who are we to do anything but sigh in relief?

Re: Not a STINKING WORD!!

The History channel was all about it yesterday, Jerry.
And yes, Di and I spoke of it last night.
My son, Dave is a student of the event, and knows more about it than most of his superiors.
I believe that as America's Greatest Generation passes, much of what they did, what they saw, who they were will be lost.
Pearl Harbor happened,
Hitler and Brother Russia killed,
no,
exterminated MILLIONS!
Listen to history or we are destined to repeat it.
Keep your power dry!

Unhappy Re: Not a STINKING WORD!!

Locally, the Roanoke Times ran a half page AP story with a ceremony photo on the subject. HOWEVER - The big story, to me, is the appalling lack of interest in any history by the ipod gereration. I can't vouch for the content of any current school textbooks, or the amount of skool time devoted to historical topics, but I'd bet it's minimal, & constantly shrinking.

Overheard at a museum parking lot. Mom. " Let's go over to the civil war display building." Daughter (about 13) "What was the 'silver' war"?

Lawd help us.

Ron.

To be fair, as the country ages there will be more and more history to cram into those books, so even if Social/American Studies and History classes don't literally shrink they undoubtedly will relative to the time necessary to cover everything worth covering. Even when I was in school (a full decade ago) the subject was a bit rushed and I don't recall even touching on the last century on more than a few key points.

This is the nature of time. The more of it that marches on, the less we have to focus on any given moment.

The only problem is that we tend to forget what 'ENEMY' looks like, and what they did.

The 'touchey-feely' attitude that prevails in our culture has no idea what it was like to have "NO MILK" tatood on an arm!
What it was like to be sleeping, when a pile of MITSUBISHI aircraft 'sucker-punched' us!, when we were not 'involved' in a war.

KEEP the powder dry. Amen and pass the ammunition!

Heroes and enemies, memories alike.

This generation has its own battles to fight.

Well I didn't know it became an official "Rememberance Day". My calendar listed Dec. 7th as the Official Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day. Kinda strange as I've never seen it listed that way nor do I feel anything needs to be listed besides the date just like 9-11 or the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. If someone doesn't get it they'll never get it so why waste your breath.
