cold air intake
Out of curiosity, I bought a cone air filter for my SVX. I took out the filter box cover and the filter. I made up a small 3'' PVC pipe with a flange and connected the air filter. When I started the car, all the dash lights would come on and the engine would stall. I put everything back to the original set up and it works fine. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to make an adjustment with the air flow sensor? I did not have this problem with my Ford pick up when I switched.
Anyone with a "how to" or some photos of a set up? Last edited by dannmarr; 11-15-2009 at 09:28 PM. |

Re: cold air intake
Theres no adjustment that can be made to the airflow meter. \\
It would help to see pics of your setup, but what I believe is happening is that in your install you are having an uneven air current introduced too close to the MAF pickup vane, confusing the ECU. Ideally you should have a length of tubing extending out down into your fenderwell, where the cone filter should be mounted. This way the airflow is stable and even by the time it hits the MAF vane, and you would also be intaking cool air from the fenderwell, NOT the hot air from the engine bay, which will actually make that cone filter REDUCE horespower instead of increasing it. |

Re: cold air intake
Yeah, I just put the cone right after the MAF inside the engine bay. Anyone have pics of their set up?

Check out this thread:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41188 The pics at the end of the thread illustrate what im talking about, you should definitely have the cone filter OUTSIDE the engine bay, as with it inside, you are surely running with less HP than even the stock setup. Hot air is less dense air, meaning less HP. |

Re: cold air intake
The first photo is how I had mine set up. The member did say he didn't finish connecting the vacuum hoses and does not say if he had problem in that setup. Is it that I need more distance from the filter and the MAF?

Re: cold air intake
Run standard box with a non-oiled filter. I went to a cone filter, and it caused nothing but problems. Fram top of the line filter is oiled and caused havoc with mass air sensor after I removed the cone system. Learned my lesson the hard way and went back to standard set-up. Clean your MAS with MAS Cleaner (autozone has it).

Re: cold air intake
Anyone else use white vinegar to clean the MAF?

Re: cold air intake
I'll take that as a "no".

Re: cold air intake
I do if need be maybe once a year..
its a mild acid, works great if you need a good cleaning. I still use Green oiled filters, love them.

Re: cold air intake
There is no reason to use an aftermarket intake setup. The OEM airbox outflows the engine by quite a bit.

Re: cold air intake
Ive seen no real proof of that..
besides, some people like the look and or sound the cone offers too. Danmarr, we have an nice set up that extends the cone into the fenderwell but keeps it high up enough to be safe in the rain. It may offer a cooler air intake. I have some pics if you want.
