Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

Changing the timing belt after it broke has nothing to do with adhering to the torque spec of the camshaft sprocket bolt because changing the timing belt does not require removing it. When lining up the timing marks I only turned the bolt to the right. Only decided to remove the sprocket after my car seemed like it was out of time with all of the timing marks lined up.

What have you decided to do?

Harvey.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

I ordered a new camshaft pulley, comes in on Tuesday, and am going to go with what you suggested Harvey, because I am only looking for a temporary fix for now until I have the time to pull the engine to change the camshaft.

Yes I am sure it will get you through till then. Just file up the key to fill the shape of the groove in the cam shaft, and Lock Tight it.

Harvey.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

If it's not to late you can fill in the missing areas of the cam with liquid steel. If used properly, that stuff is amazing.

It is my understanding that you dont have to yank the engine to do a camshaft.... maybe I heard wrong? If I am correct it could save you a lot of work though..... id find out for sure.

Not necessary to pull the engine... You are correct!

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

What all would I have to remove to replace the camshaft, what else would I need to get and how easy is it to do? I thought for sure I would have to take out the engine to get to it. I ordered the cam sprocket on Monday from the Subaru dealership, but apparently there are only four left in the Eastern half of the country so I won't be getting it until Thursday or Friday if I am lucky because they have to ship it from a different warehouse.

Thanks again,
Jarrad

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

Just the valve cover and the cam caps. It can be done in the car.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

Just got around to attempting to replace my camshaft, I have it loose. Can any one enlighten me on how you get it out of the engine bay with the engine still in?

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

I am curious as to why this is happening. Do we think the cam bolts are working loose or do we think the pully is able to move with a tight bolt? Is the factory spec too low?

Makes me want to check mine. I did a full reseal at 120 K and had that all apart, but I torqued them using the proper tools so the bolt is exactly as tight as it should be.

If this happens to my car...time for some modded cams methinks.

Re: Timing belt broke, caused collateral damage

I don't think they are working loose. Maybe a rust thing or if removed not aligned properly with the key set correctly before tightening torquing the bolt. this could break the key when tightened and began the rusting-wear process quickly.

Good luck!

Keith
