A major milestone in the SL Yesterday! I have been truly blessed with these amazing fall days we've been having here lately. There should be snow on the ground by now!

I have a 92 SVX in excellent condition (112,00 miles) and a MB 300CE coupe also in excellent condition with almost exactly the same mileage.

I thought I loved the MB more overall, but I have been driving the SVX solid for the past two weeks, and it has strengths that the MB hasn't.

Now I love them both a lot.

You have two of the best Mercedes ever created. We owned W124 bodies for almost 20 years before we sold our coupe last year (it was a 1990 300CE-24) for a 2004 320E.

May I add to your list of best Mercedes, my recent purchase:

Yes... it is rough now and it has rusty floors. But with time, I will make her look like this with the exact same color and upholstery:

My 300CE is a 1992 model, Arctic White with a custom SL front nose.

With 178,000 kilometres on the odometer, it runs like a brand new car and the exterior is pristine except for a couple of tiny chips that were covered with factory-match touch-up. A good cut polishing would make it like new.

I am continually amazed at this car (the 300CE). It sounds and operates like a fine swiss watch. And the durability is legendary .. I intend on keeping this car for the next 30 years or so.

But/and .. I am also very impressed with the SVX. Nothing drives and rides like it, to my knowledge.

Yeah the 3.0L 12V engine of your car never dies! The 3.0L 24V as the one we had was a total failure. Some say its head compression is far greater than the block can handle this is why it seldom cracks and oil become mixed with water.

Yeah nice cars until you have to maintain them. My mom must get tired of paying 2k to have rotors and brake pads done on her new one.

That is exactly why when I was looking at a 300CE, I deliberately went for the 1988-1989 model with the old M103 12V engine - not the M104 24V.

I have to agree here - my 300CE looks and drives like new - despite being over 20 years old! Every time I drive it, I am impressed with how solid and tight it feels.

When they say "they don't make them like they used to" - they are right!! I certainly wouldn't have a modern Mercedes - they are simply not built to the same standard.

I will admit that to drive, I do prefer the SVX - it has a far more responsive engine and transmission, and quicker steering. It simply feels lighter on its feet. The 300CE has the edge in quietness, ride comfort and refinement however.

What can I say - I like both of them!

Different cars .. for me it depends upon what mood I am in.

The MB 300CE is like driving your favorite living room down the highway, except with firm yet supple suspension and amazing steering that goes exactly where you point it, effortlessly .. all whilst whirring like a fine swiss watch. 90 mph cruising with one finger on the steering wheel.

The SVX is like a nice peppy romp down a steep cruising on my favorite skis at Whistler when I am carving all my turns just so and the snow is in nice condition. Smooth, stable, a light kick in the pants when you step on the gas pedal ... all whilst tracking quietly at 2700 rpms. 90 mph cruising with one finger on the steering wheel.

Like I said, I love them both a lot.

Re: My Mercedes SL Story

Oh my ...

I just got back from a 75 kilometre cruise in my 300CE after not having driven it for almost a month. I had forgotten ...

Did I mention I love this car ? I said, and stand by, liking the SVX as much because of its unique character, but frankly I think that the 300CE is a better-engineered and higher quality machine.

But I know I am lucky to have two such fine old machines ;-)

Is the Esprit still a 4 cyl? They only require 1/2 the annual upkeep costs as the eight does. They are a steal of the market but unless you know what you are doing when shopping it is the seller who is doing the stealing.

Yes, it is a four cyl, well maintained, just did timing belt, changed to green dot sprockets to get better torque. I didn't drive it, but it sure looked nice! The V8 didnt come out until 97-98
