Well you don't need to remove the glass to change colors. When I did mine I used 3M lift tape for lifting the windshield moldings off the car so I could get paint and clear underneath it.

Mike - did you use the stock color? I have noticed that the Claret darkens with age. Yours looks more like Bordeaux than Claret.

The Claret looks different in different lighting and at times the actual color is not that obvious. The other day a friend said "his wife would love my "purple" car!

Is there a reason you didnt add one when you repainted? My Claret didnt have a spoiler, but my other two did. I like how it looks without one, straight on from the back of the car, but any other angle I dont. I personally would rather have a spoiler. Just minus the whole paint chipping thing, lol.

Re: Not sure I can bring myself to do it...

I previously had a black over claret, I did like it, but after 15 years the paint was faded and looked more purple than a claret. In my opinion no bodyshop will ever get the car looking the same as the deep/rich claret that it come with out of the factory. I wasn't willing to take the risk of getting claret again and ending up with another purple car.

I opted to go with a complete color change, I chose porsche arctic silver and kept only the roof black. I am very happy with my decision.

I think he used the original stock Claret color, but that's what he's sayin', the color changed so much after 15 years no one realizes just how nice the original Claret was.

I personally like the darker Claret (in it's pure non-purple form) better than the lighter Bordeaux (interiors aside).

Just my opinion, I'm also not a huge fan of red cars and maybe the Bordeaux starts leaning too far in that direction.

Thanks Mike. Mine doesn't look as bad as yours did, when I spend a day with the waxes and such I can get it looking very near what yours currently does (aside from dozens of dents and scratches), so I 'might' be able to get away with having them use the actual color code and have it not look too far off. Or it could be a disaster.

To you paint guys out there: Am I totally out of my mind thinking of putting fresh paint on this car in sections? Does every batch of paint, even if using a code, still have variances (I'm guessing, yes)? Should I just have them match the possibly faded paint this time and then still dream of getting a complete full paint job at some point in the future, including repainting the stuff they are doing this time? (note on that, it's been 8 years since I started thinking paint job and it hasn't happened, so....)

Re: Not sure I can bring myself to do it...

On Mike's repaint I don't think he intended on getting the original claret. IMO, that is definately not the stock claret color, resembles more of the lighter Bordeaux.

As for the claret getting darker with age? I don't see how that is possible, sun fades colors thereby making them appear lighter. Clarets and Hunter Green svx's seem to fade the worst. The green ones almost turn teal looking, I had seen a brand new dark green svx at one time and that color was absolutely gorgeous, I remember mike used to have one and that green was incredible (albeit it was a repaint).

You could be right, I just got the impression he was going for stock color. But your logic on color aging does make sense.

I'd add any of the reds to the list, although I'm not sure what Subaru was going for with the original red colors so maybe that's just how they are supposed to look. I have yet to see to see a red SVX that doesn't look faded to me (yes, I've seen that one too you know who you are ). Like I said though, might be just the shades of red Subaru chose.

There is a European red I think it is, the one with the black roof, that is darker and looks good. None of them have that pure, Ferrari red color though.

Re: Not sure I can bring myself to do it...

Troy,

The body shop went by the factory color code when my car was sprayed. Id suggest doing it all at once, and doing it right (removing handles, trim, etc). All of the Clarets tend to get purple with age.

Another before:

You will DEFINITELY thank yourself down the line if you do it right the first time. You will be MUCH more satisfied driving and looking at your car.

Here's a pic of the factory Barcelona Red new.It looks a little light but it's actually a tad darker, the brilliant reds to me look too orange. The other red you mentioned is the Swiss Ruby Mica which is a nice, deep metallic red.

HA! I knew you had it painted factory Claret!

Oh I hear ya on doing it right, I definitely don't want to do it halfway at this point.

At the same time, it's a shame I'm getting $1,500 body work and paint job on one quarter panel and the bumper just to match the faded color and it's all going to have to be done again in a year or so.

I'm tempted to try to just get the money for now from insurance and put it in the paint fund. But I don't think I want to drive around a year or more with the damage it has back there.
