Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

An SVX with the Legacy Spec B's 6MT with VTD sounds fine to me.

Variable Torque Distribution, as I understand it, is basically the same thing as DCCD in Auto mode, permanently. Hence, not "driver controlled."

50% fixed on the 5MT isn't even that bad, which my Legacy GT has. Some days I wish I had a Spec B like Darkness does... Especially with the 5MT's clutch getting spongy, and the horribly under-damped suspension, compared to aluminum arms and USD Bilsteins. I wish I didn't have to give up Garnet Red paint to go to a Spec B, though...

Frankly, I'd rather spend the difference in resale value between my '05 and a 07-09 Spec B, on an SVX. The clutch and dampers might kybosh that, though...

Not having a fully functional DCCD is my main reason for not doing a manual swap.

I just have this fear that the car would not perform correctly under a serious hazard situation such as dropping a wheel on to a soft shoulder at speed or entering a tight curve at too high a speed. Just can't get my mind around what nasty things could happen if there was too much power to the wrong wheels in a critical event.
Not wanting to be over simplistic, but Subaru [and Ford, and Mitsubishi et al] had safe and excellent handling sorted in manual gearboxes using limited slip before DCCD became trick du jour. You are worrying about a non-event here.

If you are rallying your car on loose surfaces, or if you are auto-Xing, from loose to tarmac, then having the flexibility of adjusting handling using a DCCD controller is worth having.

For any other purpose it is a step too far, a complication you don't need.

Unless what you are really into is bragging rights down at the pub?

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

I think Tom used an aftermarket DCCD controller. I'm not using the DCCD in my tranny. The 30/70 splitt is entertaining. I have to be careful when I come out of the car wash. The combo of Supercharger torque, rear biasing and soapy tires makes for easy doughnuts when I pull out.

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

I'm going with a 5 speed, since theyre cheaper and lighter. They're easy to find cheap with busted gears since WRX owners love to grenade them. My currently plan unless something comes up is to swap in 05+ Legacy GT gears for 1st and 2nd since theyre decently cheap, taller, and stronger (debate has been going on as to whether or not they are the same as the old RA gears)

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

Just make sure you use a good clutch.

Even 5MT Legacy GTs are moving to the 06+ WRX 5MT solid flywheels and ACT or other clutch options. the LGT-5MT sachs clutch, and dual-mass flywheel are not a strong point, and are going out on me at ~65k miles, and never felt particularly good before that.

The 6MT has a better clutch, hands down.

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

i've just changed out my clutch and flywheel if anybody needs - 6mt spec b

other than that, there are guys with 05+ LGTs 5MT that are blowing their trannies too
and the clutches can hold up quite a bit.

Re: 5 speed/6 Speed

I need a clutch... too bad for a LGT 5MT, though. 6MT won't work.

Anybody know how much the Spec B gearboxes and diffs are going for?

Very similar.

I don't remember if the final drive is the same.

STI has a front limited slip, IIRC, Spec B doesn't.

DCCD control goes to VTD auto-only... but that may be external to the transmission.
