Lightweight pully Q

Well my crank oullys been grinding away at the timin cover and I was looking around and found a 1.3lb pully for $128 and a 1.5lb for $118. So my question is should I pay the extra $10 for the 1.3 or save the 10 on the 1.5?

Re: Lightweight pully Q

Timing cover is usually an indication of pulley is more than likely coming apart. Shaft should be great.
Get new one torqued right!

Re: Lightweight pully Q

Everything is ok, just the pully is 15 years old and going bad. So any suggestions to which one I should get from the 2 mentioned above.

Re: Lightweight pully Q

Personally, I would go for the lighter one - you're talking about decreasing the inertia (by decreasing the mass) of a rotating object. The lower the inertia, the faster the engine should be able to spool up.

The radius of the OEM crank pulley is about 3 inches, so the 1.5 lb pulley has a moment of inertia of .017 lb-in-sec^2 and the moment of inertia of the 1.3 lb pulley is .015 lb-in-sec^2.

BTW, what one are you looking at? I've been considering these as a potential upgrade...

http://www.perrinperformance.com/products/show/181

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-C...spagenameZWDVW

Or any legacy or pre -07 wrx pulley off of ebay. Should cost you less than $100 shipped.

Refer to this thread where I was asking the same thing.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32787

Last page.

The perrin or obx/UR pulleys on ebay have a good record to, even though some of there other stuff doesn't.

Re: Lightweight pully Q

I'm going to get the lightest one on the market.

Agency Power makes one that is 1.0lb. They are very proud that it's the lightest one made.

Comes in silver or black. Retail is $130, but well worth it. If it's a purchase you're seriously considering, send me a PM, we're direct-dealer with Agency Power so I can get you like 20% off or so.

Re: Lightweight pully Q

The retail is $130+ shipping

http://www.agency-power.com/catalog/...02-p-5951.html

I could get it for around $120 shipped. Please continue this conversation via PM if you wish, as I am not a certified vendor on here and don't want to step on any toes.

I'd avoid that GroupA pulley. That's what I have on my car and I get a noticeable vibration at 22-2300 RPM, pretty much the whole car is humming. Kind of annoying if the radio isn't turned up fairly loud. I can feel it mostly through the seat against my back and in the arm-rest.

Due post up the evidence. I would like to see what happens to them before I purchase a new pulley...mainly to see if it is a defect or an installation mistake.

Re: Lightweight pully Q

It's pretty much personal preferance. I have a buddy that had one and he said it's crap so he went back to stock but that is only one person though. After looking around I will most likly be getting the Agency Power on as it's the lightest and cheapest i've seen.

Okay, what you posted is plural and implies that you have seen a two or more instances of failure due to manufacturing defects.

But you posted why, which is good, but your buddy has no reference value for the rest of us though and thus, is an unsubstantiated report with no quantitative value. Personal preference I guess.
