Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Hello everyone. I am kind of a new member although i have been visiting the site for a while. I am having some trouble and am looking for any advice to guide me. I have had a 2006 WRX 5spd transmission installed for several months in my car. The tranny works well and feels smooth as long as you are not giving it to much in the corners. However i have one problem i just cant get passed. The car corners beautifully as long as i dont try to gas it through a turn. When i do accelerate through or out of the corner the whole system binds or cuts out, or something. I can have the car pinned and if the wheel is turned more than say a quarter turn no power will get to the wheels as soon as i straighten it out she takes off. I've tried using wrx and svx axles and had the same results with both set ups. Does anyone else run this year tansmission or know any reason it might not work. I am out of ideas and i just cant figure anything out, short of the tranny being no good. Thanks in advance for any input.
Dan

Have you checked the engine and trans mounts along with the dogbone?

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Possibly a center diff issue?

Is there any clicking or vibration along with the no power?

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

There is no noise at all. That is part of why i am so confused. NO grinding or rubbing or clicking. The power just wont get to the ground. I think it is probanly in the diff. Could the diff carrier plates be too tight. Also the tranny is my area of least knowledge. Im not sure but is where the front axles enter the tranny the center diff or is that the front diff. I was thinking i could maybe adjust the carrier plates there( loosen them). The reason i was thinking of that is the problem is a little better when the car is cold. I thought maybe a carrier is too tight and as it heats up it gets worse. Also is there a way i could try to determine if it is the front or rear diff( ie Pull the axles)? Thanks for the responses much appreciated

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Where the front axles go in is the front diff...the center diff is in the rear of the tranny, and can be accessed by removing the rear housing on the tranny...

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

So the problem so to speak is fine when it is colder?

What kind of clutch is in there and what was the condition of it when it was installed?

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

The clutch is from the 2006 wrx as well. THe whole set up had 2K on it when it was installed and the clutch was basically brand new. The problem is definetly still there when it is cold. However it is not as bad when it is cold.

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Sounds like a center diff. I had the center diff in my 1996 impreza do that kind of stuff. When it was cold it worked fine. Once it warmed up when takeing a turn it was like the brakes were draging.
How does the car feel if you warm it up and there take a sharp turn and low speed?

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

you do have matching front and rear diffs don't you? I ask this b/c i beleive there is a WRX tranny you can just put in and not change the rear diff but then there is one where you have to I think. ( i could be wrong so if i am someone please correct me)

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

There is no problem turning at all as long as i dont hit the gas. If i do hit the gas it will bind . I can give it some gas but anything past say quarter throttle will cause it to bind. So if it is the center diff is it fixable, worth fixing, will the rest of the tranny be ok(ie the center diff carrier, housing, etc.) I know there is no exact answer but any wisdom from those with experience would be appreciated.

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

Yeah i bought whole drive train: Tranny, diff, Prop shaft, axles, clutch, flywheel, master and slave cylinder as a package all from the same car. I just switched the diff housing plate so the studs were long enough. Im pretty sure the final drive on the 06 WRX is 3.84 so i had to swap them.

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

"If" it is the center diff, it can just be swapped for a good center diff...
Can be done with the tranny in the car....

What rear axles did you use in the car?
As it sounds like you just used the rear diff from the WRX, and the SVX axles won't work with the WRX diff

Re: Trouble with 5 speed coversion

I did swap the diff itself from the svx into the wrx housing. I transfered the ring gear from the wrx onto the svx diff and put the whole assembly into the wrx housing. I checked the backlash and side to side play. Probably did not do the most perfect set up but i did have that checked at my local shop and they gave it the okay.
That is great that the center diff can be changed in the car. At least i can get this fixed without tearing the whole car apart. Maybe i can evan go for an upgrade while im at it.Thanks for all the advice you guys are a great help.
