A valuable lesson
I finished over hauling the rear calipers, painted them and installed new brake pads. I took it for a test drive and heard grinding! I took the caliper apart again and noticed that I over tighten the bolt that holds the caliper to the bracket. It actually came out the other side and was touching the rotor! Lesson learned; don't over tighten the bolt, once you feel restriction-stop!
Hope this helps. |

Wow, you're a strong man.
Is it fixable?

Strong!
That's exactly what I was gonna say...You ARE STRONG!...So, how did it protrude? What squished?....or did the bolt elongate?
I don't see how this could happen...??? I'll watch the replies...and good luck!

The end of the bolt should normally stop just shy of the other side, you can see it in the photo. But while I was over hauling the caliper, I put the bracket in a vise and kept turning the bolt with a rachet to clear any debris, but accidentally broke through. Now when I installed the caliper on the car, I didn't know when to stop turning the bolt. I stopped when I couldn't turn anymore. That's because it was touching the rotor on the other side.

Since the bolt no longer gets tight by bottoming out, you may want to put some thread lock on, and check it from time to time...
Last time I was at Harry's the brakes were still floating around the Laguna in the second row.

Thanks, but I actually had another set of calipers as back up.

I always thought the threads would strip off the bolt if it was over tightened. So much for that!

It did, and the bolt twisted too. All this happened because my wife was pressuring me to finish. My wife is so jelous when I work on the car.

Can you add a washer under the head of the bolt? Should solve the clearance problem.

The bolt slides into a metal sleeve with a boot around it. It allows the caliper to move freely while the pistons push against the pads. If you add a washer or over tighten it (like I did) the caliper will not move freely and the pads will drag on the rotor. The bracket is made to bottom out the bolt and prevent this from happening. I guess I don't know my own strength. I hope my mistakes will help others.
