interisting problems

i am looking at buying a 92 svx the car is in overall fair condition with 138000 on the clock the current owner is a little scared and considering selling it because the trans mission has a little trouble going into third some times
i did not have that happen while i test drove it but i was wondering if that was a common symptom of the tranny dieing
also 2-3 times during a ten minute drive i hit the gas to take off and the car would semi violently lose power and seem to stutter for just a second then take off like nothing was wrong
just looking for ideas on problems
thanks jeff

You have quoted intermittent faults, very difficult to diagnose. Transmission band requires adjustment, throttle position sensor requires attention, who knows? Is it possible to test the car for a longer period ?

In view of the fact that the seller has advised you of a suspected problem, is very much to their credit and it would appear that you should continue with investigating the prospect of a sale.

May cost little if you do it yourself. There should be notes in the "how to" section, which I drew up a year or two back. Have a look, but please do not become confused by some other stuff there. If required, spares should not be a problem.
