bypass mufflers

Installed on the H6 Outback. pretty cool design.

Quote:
The H6-3.0 models use a dual-stage muffler that has a mechanical control valve in a bypass pipe attached to the muffler. This valve varies the flow of exhaust by changing the muffler volume to help enhance engine power throughout different speed ranges. When driving at low speeds and low engine rpms, the bypass valve remains closed to provide a smaller-volume muffler chamber. The level of exhaust back-pressure through the smaller chamber enhances low-end torque.

At higher driving speeds, when the engine reaches approximately 2,400 rpm, the bypass valve opens to allow exhaust gases through an additional chamber. The additional chamber reduces the exhaust back-pressure, increases exhaust flow through the muffler and increases high-end horsepower. The sound of the exhaust system does not change when the bypass valve is in operation. By varying the flow of exhaust, the mechanical control valve enhances overall performance by optimizing torque and horsepower for different driving situations.

Can you even start to image how much it will cost to replace this bad boy when it does go bad? Have to hope that they've used a 300 class SS on it...

If I had one the mufflers would be on it for about as long as it takes to get an aftermarket exhaust

*edit*
