Legacy 2.5L tranny

Ok I have been working all day, and dinking too , on replacing my tranny. I am calling it a night. I got the old tranny out and all the stuff switched over onto the new tranny. With a little help from my 11 year old stepdaughter, jack operator, I managed to install the Legacy tranny too.

Current Pics

10 hours is enough for one day. I will update more tomorrow.

Best of luck on the swap Steve.

I too am a jack stand vet (couple of times now....maybe we can start a group like the VFW.

I noticed the jack stand on the side, did you take the transaxle out the front?

I'm sure you already knew this, but jst in case - please double check the torque converter is fully seated before mating it up to the engine - the test is can it still spin freely when the transaxle housing is fully up to the engine.

It can still spin freely, untill you tighten the bell housing bolts.
You are right, Lee, this is/can be a huge debacle!

Thanks for the support guys.

Hey Tom I think this is the right depth for the torque converter to ne installed right.

Anyway, the 2.5 tranny is in, and runs great. The shifts are smooth and solid between all gears and she lock-up good. I adjusted my TPS correctly, thanks Tom. It was reading .68 volts and I set it to .49 volts. There is the correct amount of fluid, not overfilled. It only took about 16 hours to do.
I also got my living room repainted at the same time. I would come in to warm up some and paint, trim, and reinstall baseboard.
I am ready to go back to work work to get a break.

I will be tearing apart the tranny over the next week to get rid of it. More pics will follow that too.

Steve

Thanks guys,
I can not tell you how happy I was when I was stabbing the tranny and it went inon the first shot. That all important "thump" as it slides right in. Man was I happy .
Now if I can just get the converter to lock up correctly, I will be in business.

The converter slipped out of lock up under accleration and will not go back in. It make a noise like a bad bearring when it tries. This only happens around 60 to 70 mph. After a while it will go away. Could it be the TPS?

Hi Steve, gee I would like to say its something simple but.

The lock-up clutch is operated by changing the flow of oil to the converter, the oil is pumped to the front side of the clutch plate to force it on to the turbine. There is no mechanical action to cause a sound like a bad bearing.

I guess the lock-up clutch just slipped under acceleration power, and the noise now is the plate, less linings, slipping to engage.

I hope it isn't the case, but i have pondered over it, and can't see it any otherway, sorry mate.

Harvey.

Would this affect the rest of the gears and the way it accerates? She is a little slugishoff the line in first gear but wakes up opon hitting second. If the clutches are slipping than the tranny is still under warranty.
By the time I get done with this tranny I'll be a pro and have it down to under 12 hours

No mate that sounds like the stator in the converter is slipping. There is nothing between the 1st, 2nd change that would cause it to be slugish. The forward clutch is on for first, and the band is applied also for second, if the forward clutch was slipping in first, it would still slip in second.

Do a stall test to see what the rpms go to, if they are higher, the stator freewheel is slipping. Which torque converter did you use.

Harvey.
