Exclamation Transmission shift point change...

This morning my transmission was delaying the shift from 1 to 2 by 1 or 2,000 rpm. The shift itself is crisp (as always) no slipping. When it's delayed, I would say it's even a harder shift than normal.

All other shifts are normal -- crisp and quick. Just the shift from first to second has been taking place later.

Throttle position switch? Solenoids? I could really use some help on this.

This is a '92 LS-L, with a new trans, as of a few years ago... The fluid looks nice and pink...

Actually, yes. Very infrequent, but still there. I've also always felt the shift from 1 to 2 was rather rough, clunky.

Is there any way to intentionally change the shift points of our 4EAT's? Does any company offer a TCU tuning service?

Exclamation

I'd bet it's the fender mounted resistor gone south.

Ron.

I've disconnected this in the past, and found it makes all shifts very clunky and the 1 to 2 shift even more clunky. But do these resistors go gradually, or all at once?

Measure your resistor. It should read around 10-12 ohms.

You could probably adjust the band brake slightly to balance the 1-2 shift with the 2-3 shift.

What it could also be is a sticky shift solenoid.

You know, this rings true -- what with the intermittant nature. Does the shift solenoid affect anything else? Is there a definitive diagnosis? Also, how difficult/expensive is it to replace? Aren't there 4? Should I do all of them at once? Thanks.

I believe there are 6 solenoids in our trannies. They might come as a pack.
