crappy gas milage

OK, ruling out driving habits, O2 sensors, catalytic converters collapsing, what else could cause a steady decline in gas milage? Could a broken VSS2 affect this at all?

Least expensive fixes for poor gas milage that have worked for me: Clean your throttle body...replace your air filter...replace your fuel filter, if gas milage is still poor, replace your spark plugs.

Re: crappy gas milage

TorG0d is your check engine light on at all? If it is, and it's caused by something amiss with your engine (e.g. a bad spark plug), your SVX's ECU will immediately go into a richer 'safe mode' - and when it does this, gas mileage is comprised somewhat.

My engine is currently in safe mode, due to a bad knock sensor that I'm replacing later this month. I was averaging about 20.5 mpg with city/highway driving before, now I'm getting about 19.5mpg average.

What exactly would you call Crappy milage?
I get 200miles to the tank.
Tire Pressure is a big one, and really easy to check.
Stock tires should be 39 front, 36 rear. According to my shops Alignment rack.

In my book, that's lousy fuel mileage; not even 11 MPG. I average around 18 in routine, stop-and-go driving, and came very close to 30 MPG on a cruise-controlled, 100 mile Interstate run Sunday.

Is that with the '97, '92, or both?

I've only managed to squeeze out 400 once or twice, that was on 15-16 gallons.

surprisingly, it with the 92. until very recently, it was my daily driver. my commute is mostly highway mileage (25% stop-and-go highway, 25% 85 mph, & 50% curvy highway @ 50 mph). my round-trip commute is 90 miles plus i usually manage to put on 40 miles of of misc. driving per tank. so every four days, i was putting 400 miles on the car and it would take about 16.5 gallons of fuel. averages to about 24.24 mpg.

as for the 97, i average about 20 mpg of good weather, pleasure driving.

In my 94 I average about 18. In the winter it was horrid and I was averaging about 15. Warmer weather seems to be kinder on the gas milage. So yeah, in the winter I would squeeze about 200 miles out of my gas tank before having to fill it from nearly empty. Now that it's warmer, I've managed to hit about 300 miles before having to fill it. But after having all that maintenance stuff that i've listed about, I too am able to achieve the 400 mile gas tank, until the cold weather sets back in.

(Wasn't it he who insisted that there was absolutely no way to achieve 30 MPG in an SVX?)

I filled-up again yesterday evening, adding 9.14 gallons to the tank and bringing my total consumption since Sunday morning to 12.477 gallons. With 339.1 additional miles on the odometer, the old gal managed just over 27 MPG. That's mostly highway driving with the cruise set @ 65 to 85 MPH; she works-up much more of a thirst on the hilly, curvy backroads around here.

The price of premium at the Windy Ridge Conoco in Blue Ridge went up five cents between Sunday morning and Tuesday evening, to $2.079/gal.

I don't think thirty mpg is a totally unattainble number. When I go back and forth from school I usually get somewhere between 25-27. And that is going 90! I imagine if it were 75 mph all the way with no stops, mpg would be close to 30.

Gas Mileage

I had the same issue for a while and I couldn't figure it out. I ran injector cleaner, etc. . . Changing plugs this weekend (probably) - but recently I went from getting 250 miles a tank to around 300, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. Not going to complain though.

A complete mystery to me. . . .

yes he was!

i have never seen 30 mpg in the svx, but i'm quite sure it would happen if i ever took it on a road trip.
