Wow!

Another Mac - PC thread. The last one (that I saw) only lasted about two days before it was deleted.

-----------------

I use both. I prefer the Mac, it is a bit more stable. And not susuptable to viruses like the PC. But hey.......it is a PC world. (over 95% of the marketplace)

But I will stick to my mac for all my production work, for example: image editing and web design work.

my 2 cents

I use both. I realize why one is popular and numerous and cheap. I realize why one is expensive, not for everyone, and superior in most ways. Basically, anyone who dislikes macs just hasn't used one for a while, in their home. Their only experience is with some ****ty lab macs with not enough ram, and messed up system, so they (with their limited experience) proclaim that 'all macs suck', which annoys some people. I have both kinds of computers, and honestly, windows is an INFERIOR operating system for a normal person. I'll admit that Mac's do NOT have the gaming ability of PCs, but it really isn't that bad on this end. We have halo, 1942, UT2004, etc. All the big ones make it (except Far Cry! ARGH). But windows, as an operating system just plain blows. It isn't intuitive, it isn't user friendly, and it's based on extremely outdated technology. I expect MS's new operating system, Longhorn, to be quite good, since they are FINALLY dropping all the old technology, and making a new OS from scratch.

It should be interesting when MS comes out with the new Operating System. (it will probably be even more mac-like) Win XP was a huge improvement for them, although I think they went a little too far, trying to make it helpful to people: wizards, pop up updates, huge icons. I still prefer Windows 2000 pro (in the PC world)

With the Mac, I am still not totally happy with OS X. I don't like the way file folder windows behave, amoung other things.

(See, look, people can have adult conversations about computers with pissing each other off )

See You don't need to jump down people's throats to make a point. It works just fine, maybe even better if you're nice and civil.

Weather Seems fine..

I'm stuck in the office today and can't get out we had some wild wind last night... 75mph gusts coming out of the canyons... then today it seems like spring again....so It's fine ... but if you don't like it wait 5 minutes and it'll change... I love spring....(hayfever... )

The biggest difference between Mac and Windows:

Marketing.

Way back when, Apple elected to retain exclusive rights to its hardware and operating system. Conversely, Mr. Gates and company came along, knocked-off the Mac OS graphical user interface (which I believe actually originated at Xerox), and licensed anybody with a soldering iron to make PCs to run the resulting Windows.

Anybody remember the Sony Betamax videotape format? Same story.

Had Apple beaten Microsoft to the licensing punch, today's market share inequity would surely be reversed.

The whole argument itself is rather ill defined:

Is it the hardware?: Apple Mac vs PC
But which Mac vs which PC? They may be only a few types of Mac, but there are hundreds of PC manufacturers, producing dozens of different models with very different specifications - which change on a monthly basis.

Is it the OS?: MacOS vs Windows
Not all Macs run MacOS, not all PC's run Windows. There are different versions of each, with different features and bugs. How do you compare like with like?

I believe the argument is generally: Mac User vs PC User
Having spent $$$$ on a computer that will be obsolete and worthless in 2 years time, they feel the need justify their expenditure by telling anyone who will listen how much better it is than the available alternatives. It will always be possible to find people who have "invested" their money in an alternative system who will argue for the other side.

People will buy whatever computer suits their needs and personal preference. As long as they are happy with their purchase, that is all that is important.

Phil.

Sony makes that same mistake over and over again. Back in the early 90's they produced the MiniDisc recorder. Had they licensed it they could have dominated the market. Instead it hung in the shadows until a few years back, then became slightly popular and was quickly killed by solid-state MP3 Players.

Yep. A few Windows users equate "most popular" with "superior," and that curious conclusion leaves some Mac folks feeling marginalized and defensive. It's a pointless debate, as the differences between the two are now so slight, but I think it's important to be mindful of the influence of marketing and promotional strategies on issues that get folks so hot and bothered over nothing.
