Question whistling noise from rear of car

I have a whistling noise coming from the rear of me car. It starts at about 40 MPH, turning or braking has no effect. Only changing wheel speed changes the sound.
It just started about 2 days ago.

I tried a search and found this

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...histling+noise

, But no final solution

check your differencial fluids. front and rear. if you find shavings rebuild them. i have a 94 fwd and my diff is fried and it only makes sound under accelration. If it is comming from the rear it is most likely your rear diff. if you cannot do the check yourself have an experienced mech look into it. get back to me with results of diagnosis.

Well I'll let you know. I'm taking the car to the dealer in the morning.

You've got to change the name of this thread. I keep laughing out loud every time I see it. My co-workers are going to think I'm strange. Okay, they already do, but . . . well, you know what I mean.

Well I just got back from the dealer, and they could not find anything wrong. So I had them change the front and rear diff fluid.
They found nothing in the fluid. Every time I take my car to a dealer for something it never does it for them.

This might not be at all what your whistling is, but in my case I had that at about 40 mph or above, it is rather annoying, but when I would turn the radio off so the antenna would go down, it would stop whistling and if I truned the radio back on it would start up again. This still isn't near as bad as when I had a through the glass scanner antenna on the back glass it had a spring looking twist made in it similar to a cell phone antenna only with a larger coil.. that thing was really bad, so I took it off and installed a trunk lip mount antenna and it doesn't do the whistling anymore but I do still have the whistling produced by the stock retractable antenna, I just turn the radio up more so I can't hear the whistling noise, Again that might not be your problem but since you have had the differentials checked and no problems, it kind of sounds like wind noise to me.

I use a MP3 hard drive so my antenna has been down the whole time and the noise was coming from the other side of the car in the rear.
So far I have not heard the noise at all to day and I’ve logged over 150 Miles today.
Its weird.
