Talking air tools

At work today I used air tools for the first time. I'm addicted...everything is so much easier and quicker. I felt like a kid in a candy store w/ all the tools one of the techs was letting me borrow. If i win the lottery the first thing i'm doing is blowing 40 grand on snap-on tools, a big air compressor, storage thingy and a rotary lift...oh and a garage to put everything in...make that 80 grand

Costco has a set of air tools for about $90. Every time I go by, I get the gimme, gotahavs, but I fight it. I would get lazy and use them for re-assembly and break off too many bolts.

I just got a 30 gal, 6hp compressor from Sears for ~$300, and it came with a 1/2" impact wrench, 3/8" rachet, and an air hammer! I can't really play with it yet though since it only has a coiled 25' hose Hopefully I get some Sears gift cards for xmas!

For anybody interested, I picked up a 3/8", 50 ft, 300PSI air hose for $9.96. Less than 1/2 the price that Sears wants! They had a few cheap air tools too....

For those with a Harbor Freight nearby I suggest you take a peek inside if you haven't already. They don't have the Snap-On cachet, but everything I've bought there seems to work well enough at the hobby level. They have different tools (including air tools) on special each week.

I want to get their powder coat system, but my wife said NO to an oven in the garage (gotta start wearing her down - although I will admit it's getting pretty tight in there now).

Here's the method... It's simple and it works... Even when they (the significant other) know it's being done.

Step one. Tell them you bought the oven.
Step two. Endure the backlash.
If you live through it, go buy the oven! If you don't, tell her (him) you were joking and get over it. (then do it again next week).

When the backlash finally gets to a reasonable level GO BUY THE OVEN!. when she (he) yells at you for buying it. just say. "You didn't seem too upset last time I told you about it"

thanks, seems logical and workable - probably means she'll just kill me outright when I do start the routine

i've been watching prices on snap-on stuff over ebay, everything seems to be going for really reasonable prices and you still get the lifetime warantee, except if they're air tools

a $375 air rachet went for 40 dollars

Mark already mentioned this, but get a good air compressor if you're planning on air tools. Don't wory about the pressure rating, focus on the cfm (cubic feet/minute, flow rate measurement). Many tools consume very little air, however some consume a great deal (snad blasters, cut-off wheel, spray guns, sanders) and many compressors cannot keep up with the demand.

Be realistic in what you plan on doing with the compressor and look at the tools you'll be using to determine the flow rate you need.

Here's my set-up

Check the local hardware stores that carry ovens. Often they get stuck with an old one they had to take out of someones house and are willing to unload them cheap. I know one guy from base that bought his oven at Menards (Kinda like a Lowes) for only $25. He started powder coating parts for his motorcycle. Worked really good too. Of course, if you need to powder coate something really big then you are out of luck.

that's pretty much my plan. There are lots of places around me that powder coat - the marine industry uses a LOT of it - as long as I stay under 8X80 feet (really) there's no problem commercially . I just want to do it myself.

I called a place at random from the phone book, naively wondering if they could handle my motorcycle frame. The guy wasn't sure they would work on something that small. There's an ocean port here that drives sizing requirements, I think they powder coat diesel engine parts, shafts, etc.
