Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

What do you do when your custom 1/4 to 5/16 adapter leaks? Well if you work at an airplane factory you go down to the production floor and seal the bugger with $14/oz fuel tank sealant.

Mmmm... Love the smell of Jet-A in the morning!

Well my subframe is finally done and ready to install! I picked up a tube of U-418 windshield urethane and used it to repair/beef up subframe and diff bushings. It was actually quite a bit of fun and very satisfying to do. My diff bushings are pretty worn out from jacking the car up and the subframe ones were almost toast, the raised lip had torn on three of them plus rust build-up that was pushing them out of place.

Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

She's coming together! Subframe and rear diff are installed. One thing I nearly missed was having the trailing arm bolts in the subframe before installing it. With the wheel well liners in I don't think that bolt can go in afterwards. The subframe itself is black, the brownish colour is just a result of grinding some rust off other parts. I'll give it a wipe down before installing more stuff.

One thing I had to do was chase all the threads before installing the new fasteners with anti-seize. I'm not too keen on taking a chance of one of the bolts cross threading, as many of them weren't all that happy about going together. New fasteners are awesome though! No chance of rounding any rusted/swollen heads.

Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

Car is just about ready to back on it's wheels. I really can't wait to be in my new garage and get heat installed. Uninsulated/unheated garage in winter sucks.

Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

What do you do when your exhaust hangar brackets are 10 different kinds of f****d and Subaru wants $50 each for them? Bust out the tools and make new ones!

And here she is, back on her feet. Need to pick up some gas on the way home tonight so I can take her out for a test drive.

Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

Look who made it out for a drive! My god this car is different... I haven't driven it in a year. It's angry! The gas pedal is ridiculously sensitive, the barest touch snaps your head back. But that EG33... What an engine. Makes my Legacy's EJ25 look like a diesel tractor by comparison. The H6 is so unbelievable smooth, there isn't a hint of vibration inside the cabin. Unfortunately the driver's window is still broken so I can't take her out on the open road yet but it feels good to be behind the wheel again.

Re: Project I Hate Rust: Phase 1

And here she is all warm and cosy in her new bedroom after a super fun 60 km move, complete with a year's worth of dust and dirt from sitting in the garage.

That was such a fun drive! I kept it easy for the first highway stretch because she's still in shakedown mode but once I got onto the country roads there was some time for fun. SVX+coilovers+6MT+just got it out of the garage =
