Let me bring my Canadian perspective to this. To me the main purpose of this forum is to provide SVX owners the opportunity to learn. By reading all these posts I learned that the main reason for my SVX starting problem is the key contact and nothing else (thanks Trevor!). I also learned how to fix it (thanks oab_au).
Without being mean I encourage some people here to be more receptive to these facts:
1. At a given voltage a lower resistance will draw a higher current. (Ohm's law).
2. Ground and Earth are two different things. Depending on the application they may be connected together but it's not a must.
3. There is no generic relay (including most of the auto ones) with a GND connection. However, depending on the application, any relay pin can be connected to GND.
4. The fuse shown in oab_au's diagram is necessary. In a car, with a few high current exception, every circuit is protected by a fuse. There are several reasons for that and some of them may not apply to the Bosch Relay mode. But, ask any electrician, it is much easier and cheaper to replace a fuse than melted wires and relays.
5. The fuse protects the circuit that powers the starter solenoid. The relay coil is not part of it so don't count on it to act like a fuse.
Hope it helps,
Elaine

I had the same problem..take that band-aid off

Re: How To Do the Bosch Relay Mod???

Before I get flamed for reviving a dead thread, I wanted to provide some feed back.

I had this issue randomly. Over the past few months it has gotten very bad. An embarrassing moment of being stranded at the gas pump I finally did this. Problem would happen once in a while and not persist after that.

I opted to connect to the battery with a 30amp inline fuse. I will report back later with results on it, as I was not able to fix this by replacing the relay under the dash (because it did not exsist, possibly due to not having a factory alarm).

As for having a 5spd, I test the cruise control on, went to neutral and gear with clutch. Did not have check engine come on. Not sure why but just throwing it out there. Will report back later if I have it not start.

I know dead thread but read this.

This only pertains to the Auto is that right. Once it has a 5 speed will the BAND-Aid still work. Any one have a problem after all these years of using it? Would changing the under dash relay be worth a shot 1st ? Mine has only done it 4 or 5 times in the last 100's of starts, and 4 years. Can this be done topside or do u have to go under the car?

Re: How To Do the Bosch Relay Mod???

Perhaps you wired it wrong. Mine doesn't automatically start if the cruise is on.

Re: How To Do the Bosch Relay Mod???

I have seen it do what danmar has posted, but there were other factors not sure why it did it, but I had been messing with the switches and the dash gauge cluster this was with my 6 speed in. after doing more messing with, namely pulling switch pod out unplugging and checking wiring it stopped doing this.

Re: How To Do the Bosch Relay Mod???

i used bosch relay #12033862 but any relay will work. it was easily done from the top. i replaced the relay on the column with the same number relay and that actually solved the problem, i just did the relay mod for a little extra piece of mind. i do this to lots of cars that have too many relays in line of the start signal.

My 92 with the Mod and cruise ON will stall if put in P but the starter is not activated.

Re: How To Do the Bosch Relay Mod???

I love reading thru this stuff. Personally, I suck at wiring and never
did study electrical engineering. But there are the guys who know this
stuff like its nothing, and then guys like me who have to read thru it
10x to begin to get or even attempt the mod. On a positive note, Im
educating myself all the time, when it comes to electrical but for some
reason, Im still at the basics.
Anyway, cool write up, and for those who are really good at this stuff
I admire you all and thank you for putting up with slow pokes like me.

One question, this is for when using a 4 prong 30a relay (brand really
not important), personally I do like Bosch and Hella.
Would there ever be a need to use a 5 prong for this mod ?
