Feedback on Transmission Options

I think I need a rebuild again!
I had it rebuilt in 2006 by Lee Myles and that was done 50k miles ago. I would like to know my options. Can some of you tell me what you have done and what are your results up to now? I don't drive manual. Thanks for your support.

Have a transmission from another 90's Subaru with a 4.44 gear ratio put in. It requires a little modification but gives a stronger transmission and is going to be cheaper than a rebuild. Maybe someone else who has a 4.44 can chime in about what has to be modified and how they are different.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

Thanks Sean, I spoke with Tom about this option. I just would like to get some feedback on how satisfied SVX owners are with this. Thanks for responding.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

4.44 are great. faster acceleration, and way more reliable. My stock tranny went two weeks after i bought the car and i found budfreak over on svxworldforums.com and the price was the cheapest i could find and it still goin strong. he'll supply you with everything u need for the swap or he'll do it. But 4.44 are very worth it. major upgrade from stock.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

My original just went 3 days ago with 91k on it and I am right now having one built by Premier Transmission Repair in AZ then having it installed by a garage in VT, where the car is sitting - will keep all posted.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

AllWellDrive installed a 4.44 setup in our Rocket I and we luv it!!!!! It makes a big difference and is a lot snappier than our other two with stock. These guys are the best, we are going to miss the services they provided. I am trying to fiqure a way to get them to relocate to upstate NY!!!!!!

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

Yeah the 4.44 is a little quicker for around town. However I really enjoy the lower revs of highway driving with the stock gears.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

Can someone shed some light on the 4.44 and the 4.11 transmission.
I know the 4.44 is from the outback, but where does the 4.11 come from?
Any significant difference, Performance or price?

Yes.
The 4.11 has a history of failure unless it is a freshly rebuilt unit.

Re: Feedback on Transmission Options

The clutch packs in the stock 4.11 and stock 4.44 can't hold as much torque as the clutch packs in the original SVX transmission; however, the taller gears means that the rotating assembly spins faster and the clutches don't see as much of the torque. It seems the 4.44 gear ratio is enough taller than the SVX's 3.545 gear ratio to make up for the weaker clutch packs. It seems the 4.11 gear ratio is not enough taller to make up for the weaker clutch packs. Any/all of them can be significantly upgraded to the extent that a stock transmission is a pos in comparison.
