Re: AWD Inoperable - Speed Sensor 2?

I talked to the All We'll Drive boys on the phone this evening, and they feel that I have a sheared off clutch drum. This was what I suspected. As I understand, it's an easy fix, however I do not have an SVX parts transmission. If anybody does have this part, let me know! Otherwise, I'll just live with the 2wd.

Re: AWD Inoperable - Speed Sensor 2?

When my AWD quit it was caused by one of the rear axles popping out of the diff just enough to disengage. I replaced the axle with a used one as the end of the splines were damaged. It's been almost a year and no further troubles.

Wow. I've never heard of that happening. I'll have to look at my axles to make sure they're seated properly.

What is involved in the clutch drum fix, and how would you test to see if this is an issue? I'm still having AWD issues myself and not sure where to start...

If you get it on some grass or snow, and spin the wheels. You will hear a rattling bumping sound coming from the hand brake area.
That will be the clutch drum slipping on the transfer gear, that it was welded on to.

Harvey-

I'll give this a shot tomorrow. I live on a steep hill on a brick street which is covered with water and fallen leaves at the moment. I have no shortage of slippery surfaces around here!

I have to say, though, I drove an SVX with a sheared off clutch drum for almost 3 years and never heard the ratting you are speaking of.

It won't make a sound, unless the front wheels are spinning, and the rear wheels are not. Thats the only time that the transfer gear will go faster than the drum, to make the noise.

Re: AWD Inoperable - Speed Sensor 2?

When I find a sheared off drum in a transmission that wasn't driving a supercharged car around I replace the transfer solenoid valve assembly as well to make sure it didn't cause binding that caused the drum to shear off.

I would suggest taking it to svxfiles. If you really want to use used stuff I have a box of used transfer solenoid valves (that came out of transmissions that didn't have sheared off drums) and wouldn't mind contributing one.

The part number for the gear is: 31450AA260

I have through bolted gear/drum assemblies if you want to upgrade it.

If this were for my nice SVX, I'd unquestionably be using new parts. This is an SVX that I just purchased for winter use. I paid $200 for the car, and am trying to keep the expense as low as possible. I'll let you know if I find a used drum assembly to use. Thank you for all of the information, too!
