is there a way I can look at/verify these are the issues...and that I caused them some how?

yeah, pull the tranny and look at the t/c extension... probobly burned and chewed up

Significant Technical Input
If the pump turns out to be damaged (it's likely it is) you will need to take the transmission someplace to get the pump rebuilt. Considering things so far, it might be worth considering just towing it there and letting them do the installation as well.
