FWD Tranny Diff Upgrade?

Ok i got two FWD trannys that both need a ring and pinion well im not sure if i well be able to use one of them beings it got pretty hot and there may be some bad internals but one of them i can use and im just wondering what other subarus i can get the diff out of. I have heard you can put the diff from a legacy in and that it is a 4.11 versuses the svx 3.?? Is this true if not is there any other solution to geting a diff for the tranny. I have had my SVX for 4yrs and only had it on the road for 6months and now im in school so im trying to save what i can to fix it so im trying to find out what fix would be cheapper by a rebuilt tranny or find hypo gear set for diff.

find any version1 4eat and the front diff will work. Available options for ratios are as follows.

3.54 (awd SVX)
3.70 (FWD SVX)
3.90 (turbo legacy)
4.11(legacy awd)
4.44(pretty sure it is 97 late98 outback)

An AWD front diff will work all the same as the FWD diff. All FWD trannies be it an imprezza, legacy, SVX are 3.70 final drive.

Hope this helps

Tom

Lightbulb Is there a difference in the case?

Or, more to the point: will it (they) fit?

My 1st posting vis-a-vis 2WD SVX's.

Cheers!

My experience...

Had same problem with my fwd. Found 94 legacy fwd trans/diff and yard quoted $350 for diff. then contacted me to tell me they would not split trans/diff. I ended up buying the trans/diff for $400. Not a bad deal really.

Just be aware you may have to buy both trans/diff as one unit to get working diff. Upside is I now have fairly good trans/diff in the SVX AND a spare trans with bad diff. But I have recently met new aquaintance who repairs transmissions part time (shade tree??). He is going to take a look at my broken trans/diff and see what it will take ($) to replace the pinion gear and rebuild the trans/diff. Would love to have a spare REBUILT trans for the SVX!

heres the deal. The FWD trans has the same diff case and trans case as the AWD. The only difference is the rear tail housing. AWD having the rear output shaft and the FWD not having it. So, yes they will swap over and yes the cases are the same minus the tail extension
