I looked at a new toy today
I've been thinking of buying one for a couple years, but now it seems more likley to happen

Where do you keep one of these when your not flying it (or find an airport willing to give you permission to lift off and land?) I'm a land person, i dont like heights or deep water.

One leg on the ground is easy, but we are gonna need to saw it off first
 New cost for this onw would be arround $30-35,000, but this envelope is a 1992 model and the basket is a 1981, still in good shape though! Probably $5000 ready to fly with a fan and spare tanks We don't bother with airports, whever we can get permission, large fields, parking lots, ect, and landing is wherever you can get to, kinda like 3D sailing. Usually an airport would be a problem unless it is very lightly used because airplanes can get up and get out quickly on fixed flight paths, balloons go where the wind is going and might get in peoples way making them very  As far as storage, this entire system would fit in the back of a short bed pickup, and would likley be stored in someones garage, any place cool, dry, and out of the sun since wet, ultraviolet, and excessive heat tend to destroy the fabric.

GO FOR IT!!
My ex-wife was a certified balloon pilot with her own complete rig (envelope/basket/twin burners/fan, etc.) We used to go up 2-3 times a month, depending on the weather. I liked flying with her in the autumn and late Spring. It is easier to get aloft when the temperature is cooler; uses less burner to heat the air inside the envelope. Heat and UV definitely take it's toll on the envelope. She figured she would get about 350 flying hours out of the balloon before replacing it. Summer flights need more heated air to compensate for the higher atmospheric temps. That is why we fly at sunrise and sunset, when thwe temps are cooler and the winds are reduced at liftoff. I loved ballooning with her. No wind, no rain. totally motionless; like you were suspended by a heavenly string while the earth rotated beneath you. The balloon also acted as a big megaphone/receiving dish so you could talk to people on the ground in a somewhat normal voice and hear them as well. Another cool thing was we grapped handfuls of leaves while skimming treetops. She said if you ever wanted to know if we were ascending or descending, just throw out a leaf or two. If it hovered next to the balloon, we were descending (as the leaf was falling through gravity. If the leaf dropped rapidly, we were ascending. Without an altimeter, it is sometimes impossible to tell. Normal flights for us were 4000-6000 ft., although at times we have gone much higher. I envy you embarking on this adventure. I urge everyone to try this at least once in their lifetime. It is unlike anything you will ever experience. Once we were on an anniversary flight in the evening and had lit candles around the basket... the candles never even flicker! You will also find many friends to volunteer to help you prepare for launch, follow in the chase vehicle, and help you deflate and pack up at the end, in exchange for free flights. /

What size was her balloon, and how long ago? Some of the newer fabric is rated for 900 houres
I have been arround balloons for over 8 years, but I'm almost always on the ground since that is the affordable place to be! Trouble is arround here there are so many balloons that no one really thinks it is anything special, so they don't want to crew, arround 12-18 fly over the valley on any given summer day and some people are just fed up with them
